Tetanus

Tetanus, also known as lockjaw, is a serious but preventable disease that medical condition characterized by a prolonged contraction of skeletal muscle fibers. It typically arises from a skin wound that becomes contaminated by a bacterium called Clostridium tetani, which is often found in soil.

The toxin can travel throughout the body via the bloodstream and lymph system. As it circulates more widely, the toxin interferes with the normal activity of nerves throughout the body, leading to generalized muscle spasms. Without treatment, tetanus can be fatal.

Tetanus is treatable with antibiotics and preventable using a relatively inexpensive vaccine called tetanus toxoid .

Sadly, Tetanus – particularly the neonatal form (warning, links to potentially disturbing image) – remains a significant public health problem in non-industrialized countries. There are about one million cases of tetanus reported worldwide annually, causing an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 deaths each year.

Salma Hayek is working to help mothers in developing nations worldwide, teaming up with Pampers and UNICEF to help stop the spread of life-threatening maternal and neonatal tetanus. She is a global spokesperson for the Pampers/UNICEF partnership 1 Pack = 1 Vaccine to help raise awareness of the program which has so-far generated funding for 45 million vaccines

For every 1 Pack = 1 Vaccine product bought between November 2008 and March 2009 (while stocks last), Pampers will provide UNICEF with funding for a life-saving vaccine to help a mother and baby in need.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Fundraiser/ad type copy is a really bad fit for metafilter. -- cortex

If you don't want to buy diapers, you can always Support UNICEF directly.

I understand bundled "buy this item, support that charity" makes giving easy, but I'm always skeptical about the mark-ups and bureaucracy behind the effort.

Is this really what Metafilter is for? Copying and posting the text of a Pampers ad?

So many links, so little information (but plenty of advertisement).

I dunno if my parents had an unhealthily obsession with lockjaw, but they were always worried about me stepping on a rusty nail. I was extremely lockjaw aware – possibly even paranoid – from as long as I can remember.

I haven't RTFAs [I'm at work], but is it true you become hypersensitive to sound? A good friend of mine's dad had CBD traffic diverted for him back in the 1950s. This was front-page news for several days and, even now, many people identify him as 'the student for whom traffic was diverted to keep his Royal Perth Hospital ward quiet'. This episode provided a very positive spin-off. The publicity was largely responsible for ensuring a generous subscription to the medical school fund and there is a photograph of a young, beaming Ted Maslen sitting up in a hospital bed handing over a cheque for £10,000 to the fund raisers.

BTW, Australia changed to $ in 1966. Valentine's Day 1966, to be precise.

aww, a dear neighbor, a Tibetan teenager I knew in India, died of Tetanus. I couldn't believe that in this day and age that could happen. But it did.

Information about the Tetanus injection and booster shots.

Putting that into Google just now, I typed Tetanus injection before the cursor was well situated. When I looked up from the keyboard I was shocked because the results were for "anus injection". oops.
