Wow, guess I'm out of the loop - this was the first I'd seen of this cartoon and thought I'd share my WTF reaction to it. Didn't realize it had already exploded. Delete away, and consider me chastened.

The claim is that even though Obama didn't write the stimulus bill, it has become associated with him and therefore The Post is calling Obama a monkey, which is a racially loaded term.
This claim is also stupid, however.

You know, the woman who was attacked by the real chimp had her face torn off. And the chimp had been a good fellow, and was a local celebrity, and obviously just went mad. In order to try and stop the chimp from mauling her friend, the chimp's owner stabbed it repeatedly with a steak knife, even though she had owned the chimp for dozens of years and it was like her child.
There is nothing funny about this story, and the fact that some crappy cartoonist used it as a bewildering punchline is something he or she should be ashamed of.

What I thought was also sad about it was that the chimp, after being shot and stabbed repeatedly, crawled back to its cage to die. I just picture this bleeding animal in pain and not understanding what its done or what happened to it or why its caregiver was hurting it crawling back to its little cage and then dying. Bums me the fuck out.

Having read the chimp attack story, I can see how that's moderately funny, but this only really works as a joke if you expect your readers to be up to date with chimp attack stories. But hey, it's the New York Post.

But...the stimulus bill was signed into law and....if anybody was "shot down" it was the republicans. I really don't get it regardless of whether or not it's racist. It's just an awful cartoon, and not because of some imagined liberal outrage.
But everybody take their places, you'll find snacks in the green room and we'll send an assistant when we're ready for the interview.

This was changed by the studio for fear that American audiences would find the friendship of a white guy and a young black man "implausible."
