Westboro Protesters

Spreading the word? So I'm messing around online today and i found out there's a protest planned at my old highschool. Westboro Baptist Church , a Topeka based organization will be leading the protest. They targeted the high school because, in their words:
"We will picket your really large high school because you southern(ish) hypocrites keep lying to the children,...God has cursed you, with your parents' lies. Now God is rejecting your filthy raging lies violent brats, God hates you."

If you haven't heard of Westboro Baptist church yet, now's a great time to learn! Apparently they are one of the most vocal and active hate groups out there. They seem to fixate on homosexuality primarily, but after reading their faq, its obvious they seem to hate just about everyone and everything. The scary thing, is .... the internet grows increasingly littered with more fundamentalist hate material in the form of kitschy sites heavy in flash content.

In other news, Richard Dawkins will be giving a peaceful talk about Atheism at the local University.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Clearly you put some effort into this, but both Westboro/Phelps has been done a lot here already (Dawkins too) and this is asking for trouble. -- cortex

(I know some of this material has been shown before years ago, but I think the context merits a revisit. If you mods disagree.. just delete it.)

Why is it notable that two people with stupid ideas about religion are speaking in the same place?

Phelps 1:1
In the beginning was the Hate, and the Hate was with God, and the Hate was God.

This is just a single dysfunctional family, acting out their problems in front of God and the Media.

One thing a lot of people don't know about Phelps is that at one time, he was a noted civil rights advocate.

I've got a new policy: whenever someone offers an apologia for a post, I flag it for deletion.

If you can't post the material unequivocally and without qualification, it isn't good enough.

Did you not search this site for "Westboro Baptist church" before posting? Or at least run a search for "low hanging fruit"+"lolxtians"?

It's not clear to me exactly what they're protesting in this case, even after having read the article. "Hypocrisy" and "lying to the children", clearly. But what specifically? For example, perhaps the school's biology course?

Anyway, anyone who has not yet read Addicted to Hate should read it. If you think the Phelps are totally fucked up, you don't know the half of it.

Why couldn't someone get a snapshot of this Phelps with a bong?

If you're in the market for more Christo-hate, don't miss Pastor Ralph Ovadal's "The Looming Specter of Homo-Fascism".

These pathetic fucks thrive on outrage. I reckon they're going after kids no because adults have figured out that all you gotta do to beat these sorry shits is refuse to be baited.

If these students want to really stick it to the WBC, all they gotta do is walk to class as if nothing's different.

Pointystick, when I first heard "Phelps + Bong" a couple weeks ago, my first thought was Westboro Baptist. "Cool," I though, "Maybe now he'll chill the fuck out."

Imagine my disappointment.

I'm still not entirely convinced that the whole Westboro Baptist thing isn't a long-running false flag operation.

These guys are just too fucking insane to be real, and can you think of a better way to marginalize the religious right than by staging religious-right protests at the funerals of straight, conservative American servicemen "God hates the gays."

One thing a lot of people don't know about Phelps is that at one time, he was a noted civil rights advocate.
From the "Addicted to Hate" article that I linked to above:
During their teenage years, both Mark and Nate worked as law clerks in their father's office. "When a black client was in there," recalls Nate, "my father would play the 'DN' game with us. It stands for 'dumb nigger'. We would all try to use the acronym as often as possible in the presence of the person involved." (...) according to his sons in California, part of the theology of the Old Calvinism Fred taught held that blacks were a subservient race because they were the sons of Ham, the son of Noah. Cursed for ridiculing Noah's nakedness, Ham's children were born black, according to the Bible. (...)

Mark definitely recalls that his father taught the Ham story and took it to its Calvinist conclusions: the black race was cursed and meant to be the "servants of servants" - i.e., subservient to whites. Nate agrees. "He taught that in Sunday sermon many times while we were growing up." Both boys recall their father used to tell black jokes.

"And he'd imitate them after they'd left our office," remembers Mark.

I was just about to theorize the Phelps Family is the most brilliant piece of performance art ever conceived.

The lord humonguous reigns supreme in the wasteland! The best solution to all of this is to smoke heavily upwind. Get my drift? HA HA HA.
