Actress from Slumdog Millionaire for sale? You enjoyed the movie. If you really liked it, you might also like to pick up some memorabilia. Or perhaps you'd like to buy a member of the cast? You're in luck: Rubin Ali may be for sale.

Honest question: is News of the World a reputable news source?
The News of the World is a British tabloid newspaper published every Sunday. It is published by News Group Newspapers of News International, itself a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, and can be considered the Sunday equivalent of The Sun. The newspaper tends to concentrate on celebrity-based scoops and populist news. Its fondness for sex scandals gained it the nicknames "Sex 'n' Scandal weekly", "News of the Screws" and "Screws of the World".*

Yeah, I checked the Wikipedia article and figured it was a standard tabloid, but hey, sometimes even tabloids break actual news.

What's so bad about that?

Shouldn't he be asking for a million? Hopefully this little girl finds a family that deserves her.

sometimes even tabloids break actual news.

Seems the NOTW claims it was tipped off by an "anonymous source" that the dad was looking for buyers, so they contacted the girl's father pretending to be a rich sheik who wanted to adopt her. The dad, who says they never received compensation for her role in the film, and said she wants a better life for her daughter than he's able to provide, allegedly made two offers (50k and then 200k).

I'm having difficulty understanding what the NOTW is trying to prove here, and the sleazy tone of the article just makes me want to take a shower.

This is terrible. Why, in my day, movie studios used to buy kids (to keep their parents from selling them). Shirley Temple was a steal.

I haven't seen the movie and never will, but what a lovely-seeming little girl. True or not, it would still be far better for the father to marry her off when she is ten to an octogenarian goat farmer. Delicate little hands like hers are excellent for cleaning drainpipes, shaving rough feet and making those tricky carrot flowers that I know octegenarian Indian goat-farmers are fond of as a garnish. That way she can die in childbirth just before her eleventh birthday.

I call bullshit. The NOTW lists footage of the girl's father and uncle and claim that he offered an asking price but don't show it or play any audio footage.

Lightheartedly and sick, any MeFites feel like passing the hat and buying a talented young actress' freedom?

If by "talented young actress" you mean Scarlett Johansson and by "freedom" you mean "lapdance", then yes.

Let the free market decide. It's the way of my people.

The preview button goes unused again. I would like to apologize for my second sentence on grammatical grounds and my third on those of taste.

I also like how the post is phrased in the form of a question. You can get away with any accusation by doing this.

"Does Obama want to institute sharia law?"

"Does Prince sleep in a vat of mayonaisse?"

"Is the lead actor of Twilight a fecophiliac?"
