The Ebony Archive

And, via Instaboner via PostBourgie via Ta-Nehisi Coates, for your cultural and historical delectation, here is the Ebony Archive. It is the result of a Google Books search for the name Eunice Johnson, specific to Ebony magazine, clicked on the earliest available issue, November 1959, with four more decades of issues available via the links down page. It is a virtual museum of culture and history, a cornucopia of african-americana--truly a marvel and time travel machine on the black side. As PostBourgie notes, the ads alone, troubling as they may be at times, are a marvel from the gone world.

Ah, but if it only went back all the way to the beginning in 1945. That would be time travel, indeed. Oh, well, we must be grateful for what we can get.

One of the first things I noticed about TV in India was all the skin-lightening ads. Not like the ones in the link, either, very explicitly saying exactly what they meant and even showing how much more interested men were in her, so that she could marry a nice husband. Those products had a whole big section in the stores, too, bigger than the toothpaste selection, if memory serves.

This is a double from five days ago (minus all the via-link padding).

Guess which politician was advertising in Ebony in 1960?

(And this one too.)

It's interesting to compare their ads' approaches.
