What to do at night with all those lovely old buildings you have lying around? Once upon a time simply lighting them was enough, these days however, graphic artists are using them as a backdrop to something far more interesting.

It's called architectural mapping and uses projection technology in conjunction with the architecture of the buildings to great effect. It can be as impressive indoors as well as outdoors. It's not gone unnoticed by the commercial sector either,
AC/DC used it to great effect to promote their latest single recently.

Not to detract from a really neat FPP, but are they still doing "singles", these days?

I know what singles used to be, but aren't they more of a "This is the song we're trying to get radios to play so a million people buy the iTune?"

A quick answer will suffice, I don't want to be the derail here. Sorry.

I don't know, I'm 40, it's what we called them in the olden days. I have no idea what the whippersnappers call them these days.

These days we call 'em twit-tones.

This is like those people who set their houses' Christmas lights to music, only with the added bonus of commerce, which adds to detracts from its appeal.

We sure do love movies on buildings.

Many parts of that indoor piece from the Wellington Town Hall are amazing.

Here are some more mind bending examples of what is possible with this technique.

I saw this a couple of days ago, how is this done? What hardware would I need to do this myself?

Oh Horace! I searched, and nothing came up but I used the technical name (and variations thereof) and didn't think to just look for "projections on buildings" or the like. I haven't been around here much the last few years so spent a lot of time looking to see if it might be a repost and still missed it, gah!

Apologies.

That "outdoors" link is pretty cool, but it astounds me that people would drive or walk by a show like that without even pausing to take a look.

Who I think about when I think about projections.
