Earth springs a leak.
Mount Etna's cloud of ash from space. This pic really adds a perspective of size and power.

Thanks for the pic-link monkeyJuice, but for me, the satellite view sort of diminishes the event. Looks like a leaky bottle rocket on a lakeshore.

Guess I'm a Dante's Inferno kind of guy.

The caption wrongly attributed the photograph's object to Mount Etna. I believe that would should have been labeled: The Conservative's answer to the Genoa protests et al. The Earth will do the destruction of its own ecosystem with or without us. . .please do carry on.

Nicolosi might have been the more prime place for them G8 meetings. Corporations and the governments who love them up against nature that the ecological/scientific left has been trying to tell them about. i.e. Why it's not good to create human borne natural disasters now or any time, whether it be "safely" in the distant future or within the next decade.

crasspastor: do you view every link on MeFi as a potential political soapboax? To paraphrase Freud, "Sometimes a volcano is just a volcano."

Great photo, thanks. This is a bit of a self-blog, but since the photos come from NASA, it's not all that bad. Two of the most amazing volcano photos from space I've ever seen (here and here). Part of a larger exhibit of space images.

Hot stuff! Even more amazing is the Italian's ability to divert the lava flows.
