Why is it ironic that the man has cancer?

It's not.

Cancer of the esophagus, he's renowned for his voice, literary and speaking.

You're right. it's tacky. Removed.

Yeah device55, how about removing the 'irony' tag. It's a bit tasteless not to mention unnecessary.

there is a certain amount of situational irony to his quitting smoking, starting again due to the stress of this memoir, and then in the middle of the book tour, being diagnosed from cancer due to his smoking.

Yes, unfortunately that's not expressed well in a one-word tag. I agree it was misapplied.

You know, it's not necessarily due to his smoking. It could be due to his alcoholism or obesity or genetics or the fact that he's a man or just rotten luck. LOL COMEUPPANCE is a fucked way to frame things, and you removed the offending tag, but I'm not sure that saves it.

whatever you do, do not pray for the man... the doctor's treatment and advice is more than enough.

I guess there is, PinkMoose, except this is a real person and not a literary conceit, so it's kind of not that great to underscore how he's been hoisted by his own petard and ended up with cancer of the throat. It's not really that wacky a thing, getting cancer.

Whatever you do, do not pray for the man. You could kill him.

I do not want Hitchens to die painfully from cancer.
