America is done and dusted

When I say America is done and dusted, I'm saying 1776 to 2008. It's over with. It's done with done. From Mexico to Canada, there will be only pieces. How many states are bankrupt already? They can't afford to turn on the lights or fix the roads. They can't afford to teach the children. There's nothing there anymore. It's an empty shell.

Sorry to link to WND. Max Keiser is the creator of the Hollywood Stock Exchange (previously), Karmabanque (previously) and a broadcaster on Iran's PressTV. He is the former host of The Oracle on BBC (here's a clip with Alec Baldwin as guest).

States may be bankrupt but the US federal government isn't, and actually, can't be so long as we are still sovereign in our currency. I expect at some point, someone will try to fix that by having the USG borrow in yen or euros. Then we'll have a real problem.

The article is on birther-mothership WorldNetDaily, but the author is employed by their sworn enemy Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Clearly if these two forces are finally co-operating, the inflammatory op-ed must be true!

In 1969, there was the remarkable achievement of the moon landing, the New York Jets won the Super Bowl and the New York Mets won the World Series. It was a historic achievement taking place in the same year as two major teams from America's largest city having the ultimate sports success.

Crank cranking on cranky cranksite.

His key argument is that housing is worth 0. Think about that for a second. Even if the economy were to collapse to the point where we trade sacks of beans for chickens, the walls that are standing and the roof over our head will be worth something. No where near the pre-bubble values, but land ownership and walls and a roof with windows and a warm bed are worth something.

I can't find a number for Total US Citizens but lets say 2/3rds of the 300+ million population are citizens then 1 in 700000 citizens renouncing their citizenship annually doesn't seem like a significant indicator of anything. I do wonder what percentage of that 700 doesn't fit into one of crazy rich tax dodger; convicted criminal avoiding extradition; hard core anarchist; or religious extremist cohort.

Peak America was in 1969. Some might argue for other times, but the Peak America moment is still now behind us [...] In 1969, there was the remarkable achievement of the moon landing, the New York Jets won the Super Bowl and the New York Mets won the World Series. It was a historic achievement taking place in the same year as two major teams from America's largest city having the ultimate sports success.

Really? Peak America predates basically the entire modern gay rights movement (Stonewall was in '69), most of the biggest advances women have made in working toward social and economic parity, and massive (though incomplete) improvements in racial equality? That's Peak America?

(and no shit "Peak America" is behind us. It's really hard to argue, in 2010, that 2030 was better than the latter part of the 2050s because, while we hadn't yet cured cancer, we had better relations with the people of Europa and the Internet still existed.

To put on my nationalist/patriot hat for a moment, you can't have Peak America because America is a renewable fucking resource.

I see a lot of conjecture in that piece but not a lot of facts, not to mention (as noted above) a bias that's rather suspect. True, the facts do bear out that things are bad in America right now. But done and dusted? History suggests that this is a country that does its very best work when its back is against the wall.

Funny, I would've thought Peak America would've been 1954-1960 to these folks. Pre-crypto-Communist-JFK, height of Eisenhowerdom, America was seen a force of right and might all over the world (well, except for that inconvenient Mossadegh thing and few other foibles), etc.

1969 -- the height of Jimi Hendrix, MC5, Jefferson Airplane, Jim Morrison, Captain Beefheart, Abbey Road/Let It Bleed, the Vietnam War -- would not have been my first thought for these folks as the pinnacle of America.

A few sample headlines from this day in 1969: Nixon Administration contemplates temporary suspension of the draft; death of Ho Chi Minh changes nothing in Paris peace talks; Israeli jets attack targets on west coast of Gulf of Suez in fifth day of aerial bombardment; HEW Secretary Robert Finch predicts more integration will be accomplished in the next 2 years than occurred in the entire last 15; South Vietnamese Vice-President Nguyen Cao Ky predicts coup if a coalition with the Vietcong is forced; college students interviewed say that they are uncertain whether this academic year will have as much rioting and unrest as last.
