Atlantic Monthly has dubbed Joe Clark "the king of closed captions" for 25 years of volunteer work to improve the quality of captioned TV programming and other accessible media. Who else on MetaFilter has a double life as an altruistic hobbyist?

That is very very cool. It is a relief to see someone get noticed and commended for something he is so completely passionate about. Kudos.

I thought it was a pretty remarkable achievement also. The article makes too much of the people he pisses off, though. Any self-appointed industry gadfly who doesn't make people mad is falling down on the job.

I'm actually waiting quite eagerly for joeclark's book on web accessibility. that was a nifty article - his site has a lot of good info, in a wonderfully quasi-cranky tone. (and yeah, if you're a gadfly & not pissing people off, then something's wrong.)
