Adam's Apples

Adam's Apples is a blog by someone who is a really big fan of apples. My favorite thing is dipping into any of the over 300 reviews of apple varietals, with loads I've never heard of like Evercrisp (honeycrisp x fuji mix?!), the Canadian Strawberry, or a three-star exceptional apple worthy of a quest: the Macoun. The best part might be the comments sections, where other fans of apples post their lengthy tasting notes as well.

How do you visit a point of interest on a military base?

While visiting Kansas City, Google maps suggested I visit the spot where the Santa Fe and Oregon trails meet. The only problem? It’s on the Fort Leavenworth military base. How would a civilian check it out? I can’t find any info about how to visit it online.

To all the adapters I’ve loved before…

The Adapter Museum hasn’t seen a new post in years but it’s still a lovely trip down memory lane that examines, celebrates, and perfectly lightbox captures those random connectors we all keep in a box somewhere. Entries earnestly describe the technology and ingenuity required for each adapter with a reverence that elevates the seemingly mundane into what it truly is: a curated museum.

How do the bank loans work on home renovation TV shows?

I've seen a number of episodes of House Hunters Renovation, and you'll frequently see a couple say their budget is "$500k total" and they'll buy a $425k house and have $75k "left over" for renovation work. What's the structure of home loans that would make this kind of deal work for the average home buyer? I've never heard of a bank giving out loans that included a big buffer over the appraisal/asking price to cover renovations, so how do people do it?

How to adjust scroll distance in browsers?

How can I use Chrome or Firefox's advanced about:config settings to tweak how many pixels/lines are shown for each time you do a full-screen scroll with the spacebar? I'd love to shorten the scroll by about 5% of the window height, but tried everything and can't seem to get it to work (or are there extensions to do this?)

How to calculate the temp of falling water?

I'm curious how much the temperature of hot water (say, 37ºC) drops as it falls through the air, like in a shower. I don't know enough physics or fluid dynamics to even know where to start googling the problem, but if you had a shower 2m off the ground, and assumed ideal large drops, how much would the water temp drop after falling say, a meter in height?

An abandoned resort like you've never seen before.

Abandoned States is a fascinating project by Pablo Iglesias Maurer, who found 1960s matchbooks with images from an idyllic resort in upstate New York. He revisited the condemned site and not only recaptured subjects of original illustrations exactly, but combined them into compelling animated GIFs.

Are there downsides to drinking too much soda water?

I've become addicted to soda water recently in a big way and while I know it's better than sugared soda for me, I worry that at the amount I'm drinking (6-10 La Croix cans or 2L of Sodastream bubbly per day) is it more harmful than plain water? It's probably harmless but is there anything I should look out for at high levels? Are there gum diseases associated with Sodastream abuse? Does my liver hate processing acids all day? Is there anything I should avoid with these beverages or am I safe and in the clear?

The Russian Troll Factory

The Agency is every online community member's worst fears come to life: a real honest-to-goodness troll/noise factory where dozens of employees using hundreds of accounts post thousands of highly targeted and coordinated attacks as awful comments on Twitter, Facebook, and forums in order to sway public opinion about geopolitics. From a nondescript office building in St. Petersburg, Russia, an army of well-paid “trolls” has tried to wreak havoc all around the Internet — and in real-life American communities...

Brain breakage

What color is this dress? is a really strange phenomena currently seen taking over twitter, as people see a blue dress with black lace while others insist it is white with gold. So far, no one can tell why exactly it is happening, other than it is baffling for both sides.

Beautiful Degradation

This Is What Happens When You Repost an Instagram Photo 90 Times is actually a lovely little demonstration of how JPEG artifacts, edge detection, automatic sharpening, and whatever else Instagram does by default to photos stacks up to quickly make an image decay and deteriorate via processing. The video demonstrates the effects in a nice quick time-lapse way as well.

Why are Nissan Leafs so cheap?

I'm shopping for a used car right now (current one has 100k miles on it and is breaking down regularly) and I stumbled onto older (2011-2012, but not very old) Nissan Leafs going for only about $11k used. They cost at least double that new, so why are they so cheap now? Are there recalls or wear or drawbacks? Shouldn't electric cars last for a long time and be reliable?

How staged/fake is MasterChef Junior?

On the recommendation of several friends I watched the entire last season of Masterchef Junior (US), and I was amazed at what 8-12 year olds on the show were doing, but part of me wonders how real the show really was. I've googled and can't find much beyond people saying it's fake and others saying it's real. Is there more info I'm missing?
