So I've been here at MetaFilter for nearly a year now, and this scholarship application is interesting because it's provided me with a good reason to reflect a bit on the past year & see what my contribution really has been. Now, while I'm not as prolific as certain people (some of whom I picture as sitting behind their desks stacked with volume upon volume of reference book, frantically reloading MeFi waiting for a new topic to be posted), I do feel my time here has been productive. However, it's hard to pick just one thread to highlight as the one I feel best exemplifies my time at MeFi. I think it might be this one, mostly because it is one of the issues that I've commented on that I feel most strongly about. It never ceases to amaze me that some otherwise very smart people who probably consider themselves to be quite enlightened hold such misconceptions about atheism. "Oh, you don't believe in god, you must go around raping & pillaging in your free time!" Well, no, thank you very much, my lack of belief in god does not preclude me from having a sense of morality. Anyway, I'd like to think that it was a good contribution to the thread, and although I didn't follow up on it, I feel others were able to clarify & expound on my position pretty well. Hey, it even sparked this.

Then again, now that I think about it, this comment is probably my best contribution to MeFi.. ending Baldwin confusion for hundreds of people, I'm sure.
