Peter Sellers documentary 1969

Will The Real Mr Sellers Please Stand Up - a rare ~50min film narrated by Spike Milligan and made during the filming of 'The Magic Christian'*via Cinephilia and Beyond. [NSFW - some nudity]
"A weird 1969 Peter Sellers documentary, made to promote The Magic Christian, including appearances by Ringo, Paul and Linda, and John. Most of these appearances are in segment 3. The documentary was never repeated by the BBC, possibly due to the fact that Peter Sellers thought he came across as depressed. Spike Milligan narrates and dissects Peter’s persona in the process. A word of warning: The documentary includes strong scenes (bullfight, open heart surgery, nudity) and language. Peter Sellers lived for 11 more years after this documentary."

The 100 Most Influential Singles of the 1960s

The 100 Most Influential Singles of the 1960s. [via mefi projects] Mefite jonp72 says, "I liked Pitchfork's list of the 100 best songs of the 1960s* for creating a canon of great 1960s songs instead of keeping the focus solely on albums, but I wanted to create my own revisionist take on such a list with the constraint that I limit myself to songs that were actually released on 45rpm singles. In addition, to make the list more interesting, I decided to focus on records that I thought were the most influential rather than songs that I considered the coolest or the best or the most pleasurable."

*It's actually Pitchfork's 200 best songs of the 1960's, but who's counting? Besides, jonp72's list is far more interesting than smelly old Pitchfork's.

It's an extremely well thought-out article that profiles each of the hundred songs in a well-written and informative fashion. I felt that it'd be nice to have links to the songs, as there were a few tracks that even a music supersnob such as myself wasn't immediately familiar with. Here's youtube links to around 99% of the tunes:

1. The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown / Always it's You

and finally, I get to add one of my own because I just did a lot of computering to make this list. They're not really very good songs, and probably not all that influential, but who cares - I wanted it to be on this list and now it is:

101. Zager & Evans - In the Year 2525 / Little Kids

*denotes shit that wasn't on youtube in an easily-findable spot. Feel free to prove me wrong.

I did my half-assed best to try to link to the single versions of each song, but even in this infotainment superage I had trouble with some songs. Instead, I linked to the closest approximation of each single. I'm going to assume right here and now that there're likely a few mistakes in my linking, as I made this post while watching Dredd 3D (minus the 3D).

Remembering Afghanistan in the 1960s

The first thing we learned about war re-enactment is that it's fucking terrifying having guns fired at you, even ones loaded with blanks. The second thing we learned is a common re-enactor's dilemma called "The G.I. Effect", which is basically that people playing Americans don't like to die. So sometimes they just don't.
It's Like Vietnam All Over Again, pt 1. Part 2

In the mid-1950s, Dickie Goodman was a struggling song writer working with song publisher Bill Buchanan, when the two men came up with the idea of a fake radio program interrupted by a UFO attack (similar to the hoax Orson Welles broadcast of War of the Worlds), except in this case, the aliens spoke the language of rock 'n' roll. The result was Flying Saucer, Parts 1 and 2 on Luniverse Records, the first novelty break-in record and a forerunner to the modern mashup. After Buchanan and Goodman got sued for copyright violations, they exploited the situation for more publicity, by releasing Buchanan and Goodman on Trial, in which the district attorney was portrayed by Little Richard. Their actual trial turned out even better, establishing a precedent for parodic fair use quotations of hit records, as long as copyright holders were compensated. Goodman would then spend several decades making more "break-in" records, where snippets from Top 40 hits were used to "break in" with commentary on the action. Because the records exploited contemporary news events and pop cultural trends, Goodman's break-in records sound like little time capsules, inspired by topics as varied 50s folk music (The Banana Boat Story), Sputnik (Santa and the Satellite), Westerns (The Flying Saucer Goes West), monster movies (Frankenstein '59/Frankenstein Returns), the Cold War (Russian Bandstand), TV cop shows (the Touchables in Brooklyn), the Berlin Wall (Berlin Top Ten), the 1968 Democratic convention (On Campus), the Apollo moon landing (Luna Trip), blaxploitation (Superfly Meets Shaft), Richard Nixon (Watergrate), and gas shortages (Energy Crisis '74). However, Goodman is probably best known today for the work he did inspired by 1970s film blockbusters (Mr. Jaws, Kong, Star Warts). Goodman continued making break-in records into the 1980s (Election 1980, Safe Sex Report), but he never got back on the charts as he had done in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. As his declining fortunes in the music industry led to a downward spiral of drug addiction and gambling debts, he committed suicide in 1989, never realizing how he would be re-evaluated today as an unintentional pioneer of "sampled" music.

For those curious about all the break-in records not by Bill Buchanan or Dickie Goodman, YouTube user Wayne Butane has an excellent collection on YouTube, including a fake break-in record by comedian Albert Brooks (Party from Outer Space) and an early Beatlemania parody, as well as numerous parodies about the Watergate break-in.

Whatever Happened to Adam Diment?

Adam Diment was once considered the heir to Ian Fleming with his wildly successful series of novels (The Dolly Dolly Spy, The Great Spy Race, The Bang Bang Birds, Think, Inc.) about the spy Philip McAlpine. Diment, writing in the swinging ‘60s and ‘70s, was known for his debonair lifestyle and casual flirtation with drugs. He had it all: success, wealth, sex. Then he disappeared. It appears Diment may have confused his novels for real life. He is purported to have taken part in a ‘currency swindle’ related to the filming of an adaption of his first book, The Dolly Dolly Spy. No one knows for sure, but there are assertions that Diment is still alive and simply choosing to remain out of the spotlight. He has not published anything (nor been seen in public) since 1971—at least, not under the name Adam Diment.

The Big Train

"The Big Train" and other classic 1950s and 60s publicity reels from the New York Central Railroad. Lots of footage of trains, railroad infrastructure, well-dressed office minions, teletypes, punchcard machines, men in white lab coats, bubbling beakers, and even an "atomic signal light." The reels were produced as the NYCRR was campaigning for rail deregulation and market-based freight pricing, a change that was not particularly popular with manufacturing industry and the public. (That change eventually occurred in 1980, but only after the Central was defunct.)

Introducing the first reel is Alfred E. Perlman, then-Chairman of the New York Central. He had been brought in to revitalize the company in 1954, and assumed the chairmanship after the suicide of his sponsor and mentor Robert Young. Despite this, Perlman spent the next decade modernizing the Central and attempting to keep it competitive with the growing threat of truck freight, and stayed on until the company's bankruptcy.

No word on what happened to the atomic signal light project.

When Captain America throws his mighty shield, all those who chose to oppose his shield must yield. Doc Bruce Banner, pelted by gamma rays, turns into The Hulk; ain't he unglamorous? Tony Stark makes you feel; he's a cool exec with a heart of steel. The series ran initially as a half-hour program made up of three seven-minute segments of a single superhero, separated by a short description of one of the other four heroes. It has also been broadcast as a mixture of various heroes in a half-hour timeslot, and as individual segments as filler or within a children's TV program.

This mid-60s were a golden age for Marvel cartoon themes - including The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man - the latter the subject of this excellent post.

What you see here is a prime example of what happens to film that is neglected and improperly stored.
This is an original reel from It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World that is now untouchable. The film has turned acidic, sporting the strongest and most foul vinegar-like odor I have ever smelled. In fact,
Robert Harris told me a story of how his contact lenses were singed by the fumes the film produced, causing temporary retinal damage to his eye. Efforts to restore the soundtrack by Ernest Gold have been of interest to The Rosarita Beach Podcast.

Too much moxie breeds mayhem in the streets: skateboarding in NYC, 1965

A two-foot piece of wood or plastic mounted on wheels, it yields to the skillful user the excitements of skiing or surfing. To the unskilled it gives the effect of having stepped on a banana peel while dashing down the back stairs. It is also a menace to live and even limb. Life magazine article on skateboarding in New York City, from the May 14, 1965 issue. Pictures from that article are now online in larger form (one-page view on another site). See also: The New York Skate Movie trailer on YouTube. The photos were shot by Bill Eppride, a long-time photographer for Life (gallery | a personal reflection on the photographer).

The NY Skate Movie trailer was made by skate buddies who share an interest in Super 8 film, Coan Buddy Nichols and Rick Charnoski. Their film company is called Six Stair, and they have a Vimeo channel with 215 videos, including a bunch of skate films, some with old footage.

Bonus: Apple Juice, a "vintage" NYC skateboard documentary from 1990.

Bonus bonus: Riding through NYC, under a skateboard (via and via Gothamist).

Although he never achieved widespread popular acclaim, many found him to be the true voice of his generation - with themes that are sadly still relevant today.
