Anyone can write Star Trek fan-fiction, but few can render it in 3-D. Since 2006, Brandon Bridges has been writing, directing and producing a work of full-length Star Trek fan fiction entitled Star Trek: Specter of the Past. ST:SOTP "follows the crew of the USS Fitzgerald, an Entente-class starship commanded by newly promoted Captain Gaius Reyf." Last month, Bridges released his Director's Edition to the web. It should be noted that Bridges plans to re-release the film with a full voice cast. Parts 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. (Multi-link YouTube Post) [more inside]

Long a darling of the military, aviation and video-game industries, virtual reality is being embraced by more businesses as the falling cost of computer power makes it more affordable. Manufacturers of farm equipment, car seats, mufflers and other products have joined automakers and aircraft manufacturers in using the technology to speed up and improve product design, train workers and configure factories and stores.

Teddy: A sketching interface for 3D freeform design (in Java). Noodle around with the online applet (see the tutorial for instructions; there's also a demo in .avi format), or download the program so you can save your creations. An even niftier upgrade is available, SmoothTeddy (.avi demo), but SmoothTeddy doesn't have an online version to play with.

Vovox: An alga consisting of photosynthetic, flagellated cells, organized into a spherical colony, which may contain daughter colonies. But the main issue is: they're really neat-looking. And here they are in anaglyph 3-D.

Not as immediately satisfying as its more recent cousin (tho ugh far better for those of us who value integrity of image color over eyestrain,) let’s look for a minute at some stereoscopy. Stereoscopy has been to the Moon. It’s been used to capture images of famous people and mundane subjects alike, such as some guy’s cat (w a tc h out, John Ashcroft!), what appears to be Jandek’s house, and various city scenes. It’s been used on Mars. It’s not just a source of beautiful antiques, either. Apparently, it’s still around. Want to learn how to do all this yourself? Here’s how. And if you can’t take the strain, you can always buy a book like this and pu t yo ur ow n pictu res in side. More history here and here.?
