rectuMTV Fairly twisted music video (Qtime) from the Taiwanese group Loh Tsui Kweh Commune. Definitely NSFW. Starts off innocently enough but goes downhill pretty quick.

404 Research Lab . Not that I'm sorry for the double post, but I was inspired by this 404 and went searching for some more. Some of them are funny, some let you play games, some are just creepy.
What's everyone else's favorites?

"Take your date here and you will be "closing" later that night" If you're tired of the "helpful quotes" and "genial commentary" that make up a typical Zagat's review, this list of "unfit for print" comments that failed to make the guide may be the only remaining reason to go to their site, now that they charge a membership fee to read the reveiews. "Fundamentalism is the Enemy of All Civilized Humanity". The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA), an organization fighting against the Taliban for the past ten years, commemorates Sept. 11 and describes Afghanistan one year later. What they describe ain't pretty:
"With their second occupation of Kabul, the 'Northern Alliance' thwarted any hopes for a radical, meaningful change. They are themselves now the source and root of insecurity, the disgraceful police atmosphere of the Loya Jirga, rampant terrorism, gagging of democracy, atrocious violations of human rights, mounting pauperization, prostitution and corruption, the flourishing of poppy cultivation, failure of beginning to reconstruct, and a host of further unlisted evils, too many to enumerate."

John Otway is a true maverick of the British music industry and is a legend in some sad quarters. His last hit was 25 years ago and now that he is coming up to 50 his fans have promised him another hit for his birthday. I see this as a fight for authenticity and against bubblegum. John must have that hit. It's a miracle he has survived, he deserves it.

Fragx returns. 200 words or less with a 3-word title: one of the earliest and most interesting writing experiments on the web is finally back, and the slate is clean. John Casler's Fragx (short for fragments) challenges the most verbose of us to strip it down, distill it to its most basic elements, then put it up for a healthy flogging by other writers. Sounds like good practice.

Design Not Found is 37signals' latest work. They highlight the very best and worst of online contingency design, the design of pages presented to users when things go wrong. It's looking like it could quickly become a killer resource for users to report examples and web application designers to learn from those.

In a web full of lame Flash cartoons, Miss Muffy and the Muff Mob stands out. It had us in complete hysterics when we first saw it on an MTV animated special months ago. It's a rude, hip-hop Strawberry Shortcake-ish series, with music by Pharcyde and great characters. Watch all 5 episodes if you can, or at least the 2 music videos in the sidebar.

If you crow about your redesign, claiming your site is now "better-looking and easier to use" (and not, say, "sludgy as Hotmail and nearly as ugly"), and you offer a graphical tour to "show you how all these slick new features work", the link to which is a 404, are you the stupidest monopoly around?
Just wondering.

NYTimes blacklisting? "All the writers are co-plaintiffs in a well-known class-action lawsuit by the Authors Guild and the National Writers Union against the Times over electronic rights and royalties disputes." The case reached the Supreme Court. NYTimes published an article 25 Sep about the accusation though its now a "pay-per-view" article. Response to NYT from one the plaintiffs here (slow server). Freelancers had expressed fear this would happen.

The New Sins (Los Pescados Nuevos). A new book/art project/philosophical exploration/satire from David Byrne, in collaboration with McSweeney's. I can't wait to check it out. See how the whole thing came about. Fawn over Byrne's endless creativity. Rave at more brilliance from the good folks at McSweeney's.

A working internet business model? Say it ain't so! While checking out my options for hosting companies, i found these guys. They struck me as geeks with a dry sense of humour.
hmmm... Maybe if i trust my websites in the hands of geeks, i won't have to worry about my host disappearing from under me due to some suit blowing capital on a fancy chair. (+2 points for having a site that believes in function over aesthetics. maybe they're on to something here as well...) I dunno, maybe i stumbled on to something grand in the making? A company that actually cares?!? o_O
Football is killing our children - this site is just a riot.. definitely a hearty laugh, and a great parody (ack did I just ruin it for some of you? I mean um... it's serious!)...

Clearing minefields is terrifying enough, but mines that move around will make it virtually impossible: "The self-righting mines will detect the distance to their neighbours using ultrasonic sensors and communicate with each other by radio. If some of the mines are removed or destroyed to make a path through the minefield, the remaining mines will sense that they are missing and hop around until they form a regular pattern again."
