If Al Gore becomes the president, Mickey Kaus has a wickedly devious idea on how the Dems can stick it to the senate Repubs. It hinges on Joe Leiberman refusing the vice-presidency.

Most of the map is red

Most of the map is red but the candidates are still neck-and-neck. Bush has the lead in a whole lot of huge states with small populations. But Gore has CA, NY, NJ and IL. Thus it is with the electoral college.

If they were electing by square mile, Bush would have it sewn up.

Among the choice quotes: " I think Nader has to take responsibility not for what he wants, but for what George Bush does. . . .If you're a political leader and you follow a strategy which you have calculated is likely to produce George Bush in the White House, you have to take responsibility for what George Bush does. Gore and horses have something in common...big feet.

Gore and horses have something in common...big feet. Al Gore has endured criticism for years that he's constantly giving his image a makeover. Now Inside.com reports that Rolling Stone magazine airbrushed some of Gore's assets in its latest issue. Apparently, a certain bulge in the vice president's pants had to be "brought down a bit" in the photo adorning the rock magazine's cover.

The Republicans make character assassination an art form. Several people have linked to this already on their sites and I haven't had a chance to update my own yet, but Phil Agre's latest piece about Republican dirty tricks is a must-read. "The past ten days will go down as a turning point in American history. This is what it's like when the far right is taking over your country: the people support Al Gore's policies, but the polls are shifting toward George W. Bush because the media is filled with false attacks on Al Gore's character."

al gore came to town today and spoke on the plaza beneath my office window. unfortunately i wasn't able to hear much of what he said, since the secret service wouln't let us onto the lobby level. and you actually needed tickets to get onto the plaza. (here in conservative west michigan, where they were lucky anybody showed up at all!) those of us in the building had to settle for shooting a few pictures out the window. pretty much sucked.

Yeah, Nader couldn't get in, but... Did anyone read the bottom of this story?

Other protesters objected to Gore's relationship with Occidental Petroleum, which plans exploratory drilling a few miles outside the boundaries of a U'wa Indian tribe reserve in Colombia. The U'wa believe oil exploration will destroy their culture.

This, to me sounds pretty hypocritical of Gore. He bemoans Bush's ties to Oil, when he himself also has ties, and then complains about opening up the Wildlife preserve in Alaska. But hey, I guess other people's and countrie's rights don't matter when it comes to money, and it isn't in America.

Al Gore and the Internet

Al Gore and the Internet
A post to nettime from Vinton Cerf, someone who knows a little something about the development of the internet (he led the development of TCP/IP), giving Al Gore props for taking initiative for creating the Internet. Al never said he "invented" the internet. But he's had a lot of influence in creating the internet we all know and love.

I have no interest in toadying for Gore, but it does bother me how people parrot the misattributed quote, and seemingly have no desire to know how things really developed.

As conspiracy rumors go, this is a doozy: World Oil Magazine is hearing from its Mid East sources that the Arab states are so angry with Gore's choice of a Jewish running mate that they're going to cut back production in the hopes of swinging the election to Bush. I'm sure the Gore team gave plenty of thought as to how Lieberman would play in Peoria, but I wonder if they considered how much he would antagonize Damascus?

Presidential election projection, based on likely Electoral College votes. Which is the right way to do it, after all. The guy running the page is the editor of Web, White, & Blue, an online digest of political news from around the Web. Seems very even handed. The projections come from state-by-state polling data, and change as new polls come in. Current leader: Gore, by 34 out of 535 votes.
