We've read about Florentijn Hofman's giant rubber duck before (previously), and it made it's way earlier this week to Hong Kong to spread joy :D

Well, unfortunately, the duck was also viciously murdered (warning: may be graphic to younger viewers), and many already blame chinese mainlanders for it. o<

Running in the The Times Educational Supplement (¹), between 1971 and 1972 the comic strip Wokker featured a strange wooden bird who commentates sarcastically on the world, and who can talk to animals, inanimate objects and readers alike.
Here are some galleries and a short history by the co-creator Tony Earnshaw, also a painter and maker of boxes.
His funeral in 2001 was slightly unconventional.

Photographer Arne Svenson has sparked a bit of controversy with his recent show "The Neighbors," about which he says, "I turned to the residents of a glass-walled apartment building across the street from my NYC studio. The Neighbors don’t know they are being photographed; I carefully shoot from the shadows of my home into theirs. I am not unlike the birder, quietly waiting for hours, watching for the flutter of a hand or the movement of a curtain as an indication that there is life within." In "The Voyeur Next Door," The Tribeca Citizen reports, "The images are gorgeous—the Art in America review [PDF] cites Hopper, Vermeer, and Hitchcock—but they certainly bring up questions regarding privacy. Svenson, in his website remarks, dismisses the issue: 'For my subjects there is no question of privacy; they are performing behind a transparent scrim on a stage of their own creation with the curtain raised high.'" For the curious, The New York Times featured Svenson's Tribeca loft home [slide show here], the staging ground for the telephoto-enabled artistic home invasions, as part of their "Great Homes and Destinations" section back in December, 2012.

Marie-Laure Noailles was a direct descendant of the Maquis de Sade, himself a Surrealist muse.
Together with her husband Charles she was their patron, possibly one of the greatest Art Patrons of the Twentieth Century. The couple spent much of the year at their villa in the South of France.
Charles preferred his gardens and his gym instuctor, and she embarked on a of a series of affairs, notably Jean Cocteau whose film Blood of a Poet was financed by them. They also financed Man Ray's Les Mystères du Château de Dé and Bunuel and Dali's L'Age d'Or (a scene in the garden) and Biceps et Bijoux for Jacques Manuel. Dali also painted her portrait as did Balthus another of her protégés.
Apart from film and art they also commisiones Francis Poulenc's Aubade.
Marie-Laure was photographed by Man Ray and her good friend Dora Maar. (Previous some links dead ).
Charles and her Marie-Laure although living seperate lives stayed the best of friends for the rest of their lives often phoning each other several times a day. Another of her early lovers was James Lord and later in the '50s Oscar Dominguez. (Both previous FPP's.)

A twenty-five minute doctumentary about Auguste Rodin's monumental sculpture "The Gates of Hell," which exists in two radically different versions. From the first version spring many of Rodin's best known sculptures, including his most famous, "The Thinker," originally conceived as a portrait of Dante gazing at Hell from above. It was never cast in bronze during his lifetime and was somewhat notorious for never having been completed, but is now considered to be one of the greatest sculptures of the modern era.

I'm kind of falling in love with this tiny corner of reddit wherein users post their ms paint compositions. No two people use paint the same way, and there's a really good mix of modest skill and supreme awesomeness. Then there's /r/MSPaintBattles, the off-shoot of /r/photoshopbattles for "those who can't afford Photoshop." The two guilds waged war recently and comedy gold was produced.

The weather was unseasonably warm, an astonishing 50 degrees F!

Imaging The Arctic: "In Spring 2013, based out of the small settlements of Niaqornat and Kullorsuaq, expeditionary artist Maria Coryell-Martin will accompany scientist Dr. Kristin Laidre onto the pack ice of Baffin Bay." They are keeping an online field journal detailing Dr. Laidre's study of the effects of sea-ice loss on narwhals and polar bears, with Maria Coryell-Martin's illustrations accompanying field notes.

Etsuko Ichikawa is a Seattle-based artist who specializes in glass pyrography. 2100°/451° is a short film of her at work. Traces of the Molten State is another video that more clearly shows the results of her work. Breath-Memory is yet more molten glass porn, this time with wood as the medium of choice. The final results are stunning, resembling fluid cursive handwriting. Her work, the first video, and several other paper-centric artists are on display at the Paper Unbound exhibit at the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience in Seattle. (Still in the mood for glass pyrography? Here's a glass-on-wood video from Carmi Giora Katsir. And another one of glass on paper via Manny Ling, but more of the blowy-stampy variety than the draggy-swirly featured above.) Pyrography ephemera, and previously on The Blue.

That's the second biggest pile of $#!+ I've ever seen.

INFLATION! is the self-described "(con)temporary installation" curated by M+, a not-yet-built museum for visual culture at the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong and located in a future park next to the future museum. As you can guess, all the works on display are large-scale inflatables, and the contribution of American artist Paul McCarthy is "Complex Pile", a 51-foot-tall representation of ... poop. Designboom has a gallery of all the pieces, which also include a giant roast pig and a full-sized replica of Stonehenge.

NEWSFLASH: Bad weather and an unseen flaw combined to flatten "Complex Pile" into a representation of a big brown stain. Repairs are underway.
