“Pawzing Workout, Resuming Workout” [YouTube]
– A black bear encounter while running in Matcheetawin Trails, Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada.
It all started on Christmas Eve 1965
(Google books preview), as a cold and wet Michael Bond was doing some last minute shopping. He had missed a bus, and ducked inside a department store to get out of the sleet. It was there that he saw a small bear, all alone on a shelf. On a whim, he picked it up as a stocking stuffer for his wife. The couple named him after the Paddington railway station that was near where they lived at the time. A few months later, Bond turned to Paddington to break his writers block, and the Paddington books
were born. Paddington was turned into the UK's favorite animated character
thanks to the 56 five-minute long episodes and three longer specials
that were originally aired in the 1970s and 1980s, and are online in one form or another. [more inside]

A REDTAIL'S DREAM
Two years ago, Minna Sundberg was an art student who aspired to write and draw graphic novels so she decided to create a 'practice comic' while still in school. It was a fantasy adventure based upon Finnish mythology - not like Norse Gods, the omnipotent entities here were spirit animals, including an irresponsible young fox spirit who messed up the Northern Lights (also known as 'Fox Fire') and pulled the population of a rural village into a Limbo-like 'dream bubble' between Life and the Afterlife. Bear has retired from the circus to the Russian woods and now just wants to be left alone to sleep, or pursue his hobbies, or chase after Lady Bear. Unfortunately he has been targeted by Masha, the six-year-old terror of the forest, as her Very Best Friend. Their adventures are chronicled in the computer-animated Russian cartoon series Masha And The Bear. (Make sure to watch past the 2D opening. Although dialogue is in Russian, you don't have to speak it to enjoy these. Click through for episode titles and notes.)

There was one wild bear left in Switzerland. Last year, M13 (Mike to his friends) was displaying troubling behavior, but a bear expert with the World Wildlife Foundation was optimistic about the possibility of retraining him
(via rubber bullets and firecrackers) to be more wary of humans and less likely to forage near houses for food. [more inside]

It started with a little girl who had polio
, who later became a seamstress and made clothing and little things, like little pin cushion elephants
. They were popular, not as sewing accessories, but as children's toys. The elephants would be joined by a menagerie of stuffed animals, including tigers and pigs
. Some animals were set on iron wheels
, including bears
. But it wasn't until US political cartoon featuring President Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot a small black bear
in November 1902 that "teddy" bears became popular, first in 1902 in the United States, made and sold by Jewish Russian immigrants, Rose and Morris Michtom
(who would ride the success of Teddy's Bear to form the Ideal Toy Company
). Back in Germany, Margarete Steiff's array of toy animals expanded to include a jointed, plush bear, 55 cm tall: 55 PB

saw the mobile bears and ordered 3,000. A new factory had to be built, and bears were made, most likely shipped across the ocean, but their fate is a mystery
