Goodnight Opus

The final Opus comic strip appeared online a couple hours ago, but the final reveal of the beloved penguin's 'final paradise' had to wait for the Humane Society to update its website. (An interesting strategy for Berkeley Breathed, who started the eponymous Sunday Funnie as absolutely-paper-only... I'm sure Opus fans who acquired newsstand "Saturday Preview" editions of their Sunday papers are especially pissed) Well, the waiting is finally over because here he is... ...in the pages of "Goodnight Moon". After all his references to Peanuts and a recent appearance at the Charles Schulz Museum, I had publicly guessed he'd end up "sharing a doghouse with Snoopy", but did so too late to enter the contest. Berkeley Breathed explained much of it here and here. Previously on MeFi and Previously on MeFi ...thus bringing semi-closure to one of my personal obsessions. In tribute, I am currently attired only in a towel, like Steve Dallas in the last three strips. And I wrote the title to this post hours before seeing the final panel. Spooky.

The Official Berkeley Breathed Website [warning: ComicSans] announced that the weekly "Opus" comics for August 26th AND September 2nd* "have been withheld from publication by a large number of client newspapers across the country, including Opus' host paper The Washington Post." The reason? Making jokes aout Islam. And just the week before, Opus was thoroughly ridiculing the late Jerry Falwell. BB recommends catching his missing strips in the Salon.com comics section. But it being the Internet, somebody has already found and posted tomorrow's "Opus". Let's hear it for Fatima Struggle!!!
Berkeley Breathed is no stranger to controversy. Even his latest children's book, "Mars Needs Moms", was declared "Politically Incorrect". He is no stranger to me, either, although my last email exchange with him was over 3 years ago and I had nothing to do with this recent interview at MSNBC.com.
*Comic strip trivia: Most newspapers have their Sunday comics printed weeks in advance; that's why Kudzu ran Sunday strips two weeks after the dailies ended when Doug Marlette died.

AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU TOO! It's getting increasingly more and more difficult to find decent Bloom County and Outland fan links. Like the rest of the 'Net, they're being replaced with ebay clones and page cannot be found errors instead of actual content oriented sites paying homage and tribute to... I know. Berke Breathed quit several years go. I should be able to just let it go. So I'm nostalgic, so sue me. I started looking for links that weren't broken, and came across... Who the heck is Lee Vasche ???
