One hundred years ago today, September 23, 1908, the Chicago Cubs played the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds. In one of the best seasons in baseball history, the two teams were in a hot pennant race - separated by one game with two weeks left in the season. What happened next is one of the most famous blunders (if it even was a blunder) in baseball history. [more inside]

World (er... MLB) Champions once more. The last time the Boston Red Sox
lost was in the 86
World Series. The last time they won was 86 Years Ago, when they beat the
Chicago Cubs in the 1918 World
Series. (The Cubs finished that season with 86
wins.) This year, after retiring the Anaheim Angels 8-6,
they lost three straight to the New
York Yankees in the ALCS
and seemed to be on the verge of failing
once
again. Eight straight wins later, they finally manage to eighty-six
the Curse of the
Bambino.

Who'dda thunk it? We interrupt our usual story about how badly the Cubs suck to say that the Cubs just made the playoffs this year. Will long-suffering Cubs fans be vindicated? Is this the end of the billy-goat curse? Bonus: link to audio of Harry Caray yelling "cubs win!"

With negotiations breaking down, the Chicago Cubs have decided to sue "rooftop clubs" that sell tickets to watch games on rooftops surrounding Wrigley Field. Apparently the tickets cost between $70-$130. The Cubs are claiming unjust enrichment and public performance of a copyrighted work, due to the "clubs" showing the games to patrons via television. Those loveable losers, the Cubbies, are six games up in the standings and have been in first place for most of the season. Are these guys for real? Or will Slamm'n' Sammy and Co. fall to the curse of the goat once again? They're made a believer out of me, but being a Cubs fan I know their failure in '69 hangs over these guys like an evil shadow.
