"To mark the 40th anniversary of the Internet, DARPA has announced the DARPA Network Challenge.... The challenge is to be the first to submit the locations of ten moored, 8 foot, red weather balloons located at ten fixed locations in the continental United States. Balloons will be in readily accessible locations and visible from nearby roadways." Teams must register by December 1st and have two weeks to submit balloon locations. Popular Science has a bit more. The New Yorker's "Critterati" contest invites you to "take a picture of your pet—dog, cat, ferret, iguana, or any other nonhuman member of the animal kingdom—dressed as a character from literature, and upload it to newyorker.com by October 25th." Gallery | About | Rules | Enter. MetaFilter's own Jessamyn happens to be a judge (so well-dressed chicken entries might just have an edge, amirite?). "There will be up to 5 winners. Winning submissions, along with the creator's name, will be featured in a slideshow on www.newyorker.com and each winner will receive a signed copy of the book 'Indognito'.” The contest is only open to U.S. and Canadian residents (except Quebec), sadly, but the rest of us can still enjoy the hilarious discomfiture of other people's pets dressed up like Hairy Potter, Oedipuss, Huckleberry Fins and Miss Havishamster.
