Insect Sushi Shoichi Uchiyama makes sushi of a different kind. Academic studies have shown insects are rich in nutrition and many are even more nutritionally balanced than meat or fish... In addition, they grow much faster and require less feed than animals and fish, and leftover vegetables are enough to farm many kinds of bugs. They grow in small spaces and don't compete with human beings over food... Recipes inside. (via Scribal Terror) Yellow Hornet Larvae Blanch the larvae in boiling water for 30 seconds, cool them off and serve with soy sauce and wasabi (Japanese horseradish). Mr Uchiyama says: "The larvae need to be fresh and the best ones are those that you have just taken from a nest, still moving. Then they are sweet and creamy." Argentine Cockroach Cut open shell, scoop out meat and fry with butter. Replace in shell to serve on top of salad. "It has no smell at all, but the texture of tender fish," says Mr Uchiyama. Hornet or Silkworm Pupae Fry at a high temperature for a very short time and serve wrapped in slices of "kamaboko" fish paste.

FONT FIGHT! the long-awaited (by me and other fontaholics) follow-up to Font Conference. Better than the first IMO, but I'm sure we can still take issue with some of the 'characters'. Interestingly, in the previous thread, I suggested Tahoma as a Native American, along with a bunch of other font ideas they didn't use (they made Playbill a Cowboy? I can think of better Western-ish fonts - am I the only one who's heard of Gold Rush?). via Neatorama and Miss Cellania because I'm too cool to check out the videos at CollegeHumor.com myself.

An antidote to the holly jolly malaise: Few Christmas carols contain as much blood and suffering as "Down in yon forest." It was first documented in England by Ralph Vaughan Williams, but John Jacob Niles found an even gorier version in North Carolina (Alfred Deller's rendition). Niles was also responsible for another creepy Christmas song: "I wonder as I wander" (audio). In fact, the mountain interior of the United States is a rich ground for such tunes, like "Lady Gay" (variant), "Fair Charlotte," and "Timbo fight." The English continue celebrating Christmas with the ritualized presentation and ingestion of a severed pig head (video). Beware of overindulgence, or be prepared to answer J.M. Gates' musical question, "Did you spend Christmas Day in jail?" (see also: "Death might be your Santa Claus"). Still having a blue Christmas? It will soon be over.

8 Forgotten Kids Shows Sure to Give You Nightmares Although I have to say I have never forgotten New Zoo Revue. Because... how could you? (And apparently Freddy and Charlie were hiding a lot of latent homosexual rage... who knew?). Man, it's hard to believe that show was on for 27 years. Also: Dusty's Treehouse (Couldn't find any clips, but that marionette spider used to seriously creep me out. As did Dusty.), Ben Vereen in Zoobilee Zoo, Christian kids' show Joy Junction discusses dirty pictures, Pinky and Perky twist, the Wiggles point their fingers and twist (twisting is popular, apparently), and the double entendres of Britain's Rainbow.

A cat with no face is nonetheless loved very much. Let's be blunt, Chase the cat is a surprising creature. When she was only a few weeks old, she lost her face in a car accident. While this link isn't exactly NSFW by any use of the term, she is a disfigured cat - no face, no eyelids - and at first she's a little hard to look at. However, she is in no pain and she is obviously well loved and well taken care of. Chase is currently "employed" as a therapy cat, so that people can "feel just as great about themselves and realize that not everyone looks perfect and that is OK."

Entomological blogger Bug Girl (previously) debunked a web site touting the benefits of giant Japanese non-biting genital lice as personal "pets" (they just live happily in your underwear. It’s so COOL! They grow, and have families. You can feel em living and crawling around!). She dismissed it as a hoax. So the site's author sent her a sample.
