DC Blacklists the Outhouse. DC has been upset at the comics news site for running satirical articles about them (as well as other publishers), and has informed them that they are revoking access to their creators for interviews, according to Christian "Bluestreak" Hoffer. From the post:
We first caught wind of the blacklist when a marketing representative from DC turned down a request from Eric Ratcliffe a couple of weeks ago to bring a creator onto his long running “Why I Love Comics” podcast. Unlike the dozens of interview denials DC had sent us in the past, their marketing rep wanted Eric to call him to explain exactly why the interview was denied. We never followed up and dismissed the unusual request as one of the many, many weird things coming out of DC over the last few months.

Superman is a good guy. More than that, Superman is the best guy. Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster in 1932, he's the archetypal superhero, a man of enormous power who places himself in service to the powerless. To borrow a famous phrase from the 1940s Superman radio serial, he stands for "truth, justice and the American way". - Why Orson Scott Card isn't the right man to write Superman. - Superman contract for anti-gay author causes growing anger

Wonder Woman's Half-Brother Has Defeated Both Batman and Spiderman Along with Orion (created by Jack Kirby), a character has appeared in recent issues of Wonder Woman who may be familiar to people from Chicago.

Wesley Willis (1963-2003) was a performer and visual artist involved in the independent music scene of late-'90s Chicago. A character named Milan, with very similar appearance and mannerisms to Willis', is featured in recent issues of Wonder Woman under DC's "New 52" marque.

Alan Moore and Superfolks

In 1977 Dial Press of New York published Robert Mayer’s first novel, Superfolks. It was, amongst other things, a story of a middle-aged man coming to terms with his life, an enormous collection of 1970s pop-culture references, some now lost to the mists of time, and a satire on certain aspects of the comic superhero, but would probably be largely unheard of these days if it wasn’t for the fact that it is regularly mentioned for its supposed influence on a young Alan Moore and his work, particularly on Watchmen, Marvelman, and his Superman story, Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? Alan Moore and Superfolks: Part 1: The Case for the Prosecution, Part 2: The Case for the Defence, Part 3: The Strange Case of Grant Morrison and Alan Moore.

How do you baffle a vegetable?

Hellblazer, the DC/Vertigo comic starring Alan Moore created occult investigator John Constantine, is being cancelled at issue #300 to make way for a new comic set in DC's New 52 universe. Hellblazer was DC's longest running continuously numbered comic and it's cancelation marks the last of the DC Comics characters with Vertigo titles being taken back into the mainstream DC universe (previously). Vertigo was originally an imprint for mature readers occult themed titles and creator owned work, though it has changed over the years with an adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo becoming the first Vertigo to receive TV advertising.

The Annotated "Crisis On Infinite Earths"

Crisis on Infinite Earths was a 12-issue comic book maxi-series published in 1985 and 1986 in which DC Comics condensed their multiverse into a single universe, thus "simplifying" and "improving" it. Whether they succeeded in that goal is a good question, and one I shan't address. Crisis is, however, incredibly important to understanding DC continuity, as well as being possibly the most significant crossover series of all time.

DC Comics hinted recently that one of its first-tier superheroes would be revealed as gay, and here he is: Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern (...sort of). This Alan Scott is not exactly the character created by Martin Nodell and first seen in July 1940's All-American Comics #16 (a starring role in his own series followed soon after). An explanation of the character's tangled history defies articulation and staggers sense, but in essence this Alan Scott is a reimagined version of that character whose first in-continuity adventures are taking place in the present, on the alternate earth that is the focus of DC's new series, Earth Two. It's complicated.

Alan Scott may be the first "major" DC hero to be written as a gay man, but he is hardly the first gay superhero in mainstream comics. A few highlights:

The first openly gay mainstream superhero was probably Marvel's Northstar, a previously forgettable character who gained unexpected relevance when he announced his sexual preference in a 1992 issue of Alpha Flight; he will be married to his male partner in this month's issue of Astonishing X-Men. The Authority's Apollo and Midnighter are thinly-veiled parodies of Superman and Batman who are gay lovers (this is, no pun intended, played straight); they now star in DC's Stormwatch series. Most prominently, DC's Batwoman is a lesbian superheroine currently starring in her own title.

"iZombie will be the last time I’ll ever write for DC... I decided quite some time ago, but waited until after the cancellation of my book was announced to discuss it. The short version is, I don’t agree with the way they treat other creators and their general business practices." writer Chris Roberson ends his relationship with DC Comics, pointing at a post by David Brothers as a summation of his ethical concerns. Roberson's work at DC has included turning around Superman after J. Michael Straczynski left mid-story, iZombie and a spin-offs from Vertigo's Fables featuring Cinderella as a super spy.
What's Worse Than a Muslim Superhero? The Answer May Surprise You.

The most recent issue of Superman, 712, was supposed to have a certain storyline, but it seems at the last minute, DC Comics decided to nix that storyline and instead publish a five-year-old story about Krypto the Super-Dog. These sorts of things happen, but Comics Alliance opined (with some help from direct sources) that the change was due to DC not wanting to feature a Muslim superhero (the original story had Superman aiding "Sharif", a Muslim superhero.) The theory is, after the brouhahae surrounding the Muslim Batman and Superman renouncing his American citizenship, DC is hesitant to add any more fuel to the "DC hates America" fire.

"But," says comic-book muckraker Rich Johnston, "I have inside DC stories that are telling me the REAL reason the story got nixed." He claims it's not about Muslims, it's about...well, just see for yourself what it's allegedly really about.
