Dubbel Dutch: "I think we need more [musical] schizophrenics"

Marc Glasser started making electronic music when he was a teenager, and now produces music under the name Dubbel Dutch and releasing it most often on the eclectic Mixpak label, whose general sound often leans towards weird takes on reggae riddims. But as Glasser mentioned in a 2010 interview, he has been "opening up to music from everywhere. Cumbia, dancehall, kuduro, South African house, Dutch bubbling, Bmore club, Chicago juke and footwork*, old skool jungle and hardcore, garage, UK Funky and all that mingles with, or shares influences with, these sounds." What does this "schizophrenic" collage of musical styles sound like? Start with Self Help Riddims and the title track video, Self Help Riddim, then go from there. [more inside]

wenn ich durch Berlin-City cruise is' Reggae mein Motor

When you think of Berlin, you think of Cold War thrillers, the Wall, Cabaret and reggea? You do if you know about Seeed, Berlin's finest reggea/dancehall/hiphop music group. What finer way to unwind on a Tuesday evening than with a few of their best songs, like their first hit, Dickes B, an ode to their hometown or perhaps Aufstehn (featuring Ceelo Green), Ding, Music Monks, Wonderful Life or Augenbling are more your style. Limonious in fine style

Wilfred Limonious was a visual artist who created many album covers, flyers etc. for dancehall artists. His best-known work is in a light-hearted style inspired by comic strips. In Fine Style collects several illustrations by Limonious along with related paraphernalia, and Interruptor maintains a more comprehensive archive of his cover artworks.

Portia Nuh Play

"Portia Simpson Miller, the former and newly re-elected Prime Minister of Jamaica and representative of the People's National Party, recently took an historically significant position by openly supporting GLBT legal protection in Jamaica, a country internationally notorious for a "culture of homophobia." Miller's statements come at a time of great cultural change in both Jamaica and dancehall music. This is for her." This is a mixtape of dancehall music and some of it is NSFW.

Ba ba ba ba bird flu!

The "Bird flu dance" is "sweeping" Africa. Or at least the Ivory Coast. DJ Lewis created the dance (youtube warning) which was described in the BBC article as being "like a chicken with Parkinson's disease trying to dance to hip-hop". There are examples all over youtube (warning: here be lofi youtube videos).
