Barry Letts (1925-2009)

Barry Letts, classic Doctor Who producer, has died. Barry became producer of the programme in Jon Pertwee's first year and was then instrumental in casting Tom Baker as his replacement and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith and co-created The Master. His contribution in terms of selecting talent and collaborators did much to define the legacy of the programme. This is a great loss.

PHR (Physicians for Human Rights) have released a new report (pdf) that details the extent to which doctors were involved in monitoring and recording data on detainees subjected to waterboarding and other techniques [via] From the article:

A team of PHR doctors authored the white paper, which details how the CIA relied on medical expertise to rationalize and carry out abusive and unlawful interrogations. It also refers to aggregate collection of data on detainees’ reaction to interrogation methods. Physicians for Human Rights is concerned that this data collection and analysis may amount to human experimentation and calls for more investigation on this point. If confirmed, the development of a research protocol to assess and refine the use of the waterboard or other techniques would likely constitute a new, previously unknown category of ethical violations committed by CIA physicians and psychologists.

In 1999, Dr. Jerri Nielsen was the only doctor in the winterover crew at the South Pole Station in Antarctica. While there, she discovered and treated her own breast cancer until she could be airlifted out. She died yesterday of breast cancer at age 57. Chemotherapy drugs were airdropped in July of '99, and with the help of specialists (via satellite) and fellow winterover crew members, who helped her biopsy her lump and administer chemotherapy, she began treatment as best she could. She was airlifted out at the earliest possible opportunity (it was only 58 degrees below zero). She wrote a book about her experience.

Urban legend has it that the province of Saskatchewan, Canada appeared in red in some 1950's American social studies textbooks, along with other "communist" countries such as Russia, China and Cuba. It is true that Saskatchewan's "natural governing party", the socialistic New Democratic Party have held power in the province for 47 of the last 65 years. And it's true that the NDP's most famous leader (and Canada's Greatest Canadian), Tommy Douglas, brought universal healthcare to the province, an achievement which paved the way for it to come to the rest of Canada. But now, after suffering their worst defeat in 20 years, Saskatchewan's New Democratic Party is searching for a new leader... So far, the declared candidates include a former Deputy Premier, a current MLA and a lawyer who ha served behind-the-scenes as the party's president. Oh, and a young, community organizing doctor who some are calling "Saskatchewan's Obama". There are lots of parallels, not least of which that he's definitely got the cool vibe down!

In case you’ve ever wondered, “How DO male doctors feel when they do a pelvic exam?”, this show may provide some interesting answers. Goldman gives a brief history of pelvic exams (an early speculum-type advice was found in the ruins at Pompeii) and interviews both patients and doctors about their experiences and attitudes during pelvic exams. Upon the Nazi invasion of Poland, pediatrician Eugeniusz Łazowski and his friend Stanisław Matulewicz fabricated a fake typhus epidemic to save Polish Jews from the Nazis. Knowing that typhus-infected Jews would be summarily executed, non-Jews were injected with the harmless Proteus OX19, which would generate false positives for typhus. Anglicising his name to "Eugene Lazowski", the doctor moved to the United States after the war. He lived and worked in Chicago from 1958, and passed away in late 2006 at the vernerable age of 92, in Eugene (!), Oregon. Oddly little is written about Lazowski and Matulewicz on the web; although apparently there has been work on a documentary titled "A Private War" by a filmmaker named Ryan Bank. So feel free to add supporting links if you are aware of any.

Now the BBC is replacing a couple of lost episodes in a live series Doctor Who DVD with animated versions, to match the soundtracks, which weren't lost. Of course, we've seen some Flash based episodes already.
