Planet Of The Dead

On the subject of returning British television classics.. Doctor Who returns tonight for the first of four specials to be aired this year in lieu of a proper series. British MeFites watch David Tenant run through the sand as I type this while others wait anxiously for other means of viewership to become available. The four specials, the first of which, Planet Of The Dead airing tonight make up the final three stories (the last two comprising a single story) of David Tenant as the arguably most beloved Doctor in franchise history. Tenant reportedly cried whilst reading his final moments as the 903 year old time traveler slash star of the longest running Science Fiction program in television history.

Tonight's story is said to be a "fun romp", in preparation of the dark and sad stories to come that bring the end of a highly successful era led by Russel T Davies and transition fans into a new chapter in the shows history. Led by Steven Moffat and Matt Smith as show-runner and star, respectively.

Once Upon A Time Lord

It's easy to take for granted in today's data-drenched world. But time was, if you wanted to see Doctor Who and you had the misfortune of being an American. You have very few options, you could hope to connect to someone across the world via a BBS once the 80's rolled around and FidoNet mail someone who may be able and/or willing to send you NTSC VHS copies from their own collection, taking the generational hit in quality as penance for your copyright crime. Or you could phone your local PBS station and beg them to show the Tom Baker era episodes that proved popular with the more imaginative kids (or poor kids, depending on whether or not you had CATV) . Imagine the frustration of being an American fan in the 70's and 80's. Only seeing the show as "movies" presented late night UHF or PBS. Although the legendary theme kept kids as enthralled as ever, abitrary order of serial trasmission and the lack of the cliffhanger effect effectively neutered much of the appeal of the program. When watching a 30 minute program, shoddy sets are easy to take. When viewing it in "movie" format, it seems just like that.. a really, really cheap movie. So Americans never came to fully embrace the program. In the late 80's however, there was a Doctor Who convention tour was mounted in an attempt to rouse American interest in the show again, which ultimately failed. As the Doctors died the non regenerative death of actors, little notice was ever taken in America.

Even the infamous attempt at an American continuation/semi-reboot of the series had a larger audience in Britain then America. It wasn't until the 2005's kickstart and it's subsequent appearance on file sharing networks that the show began to have a sizable American audience. Though in true American form, the darker (if shallower), and sexier (if pointlessly so) spinoff Torchwood has been moreso popular with Americans.

With Doctor Who being such a uniquely British program, with British themes and quirks and cultural references however. Can it ever truly be a popular program with Americans? Can a show that happily straddles the line between stupid and clever, childish and dramatic, family and adult, that never overly concerns itself with continuity despite having a mess of it be popular with American audiences who want dark gritty continuity heavy sci-fi?

The Genesis of Doctor Who

"A frail old man lost in space and time. They give him this name because they don't know who he is. He seems not to remember where he has come from; he is suspicious and capable of sudden malignance; he seems to have some undefined energy; he is searching for something as well as fleeing from something. He has a 'machine' which enables them to travel together through time, through space, and through matter." The Genesis of Doctor Who.

David Tennant Calls Time On Dr Who

The Doctor is set to regenerate once again as David Tennant calls time on Doctor Who. "When Doctor Who returns in 2010 it won’t be with me" Tennant, widely acknowledged as one of the most popular actors ever to play the Doctor, said. "Now don’t make me cry. The 2009 shows will be my last playing the doctor.” Speculation now turns to who will play the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor. With the 2008 Christmas special named 'The Next Doctor', it is possible that we may not have long to wait until we get some clues. Check out the trailer for 'The Next Doctor' here.

What Are You Doing Here? In case you're wondering, Scott Grey was for many years the writer of the comic strips in Doctor Who Magazine. At least I assume it's the same one.

And I'm sure someone said it in the US TV movie.

Yes, it counts.

Even homemade Daleks EXTERMINATE!

Project Dalek: Alan has deliberately 'beefed up' the dome. From a child's eye view it looks like half an inch thick battle armour but the dome is really only four millimetres in thickness. This looks more substantial when viewed from underneath - an angle from which children often see Daleks. Prop history, production stills, handicraft, and virtual models. Very nice little DIY guides available with forum sign-up. (Hatred of life not included.)

Script-Doctorin' the TARDIS

As of 2010 Steven Moffat will be replacing Russell T. Davies as lead writer and executive producer of Doctor Who. In 2005 Davies revived the series, which had been dormant (bar the odd US co-production or audiodrama) since 1989, for BBC Wales. It won awards and was successful enough to spawn the spin-offs Sarah Jane Adventures and the popular-in-America Torchwood. He is replaced by Moffat, one of the regular writers on the show, whose highly acclaimed episodes have won a number of awards and nominations. "I applied before but I got knocked back 'cos the BBC wanted someone else. Also I was seven. Anyway, I'm glad the BBC has finally seen the light and it's a huge honour to be following Russell into the best - and the toughest - job in television. I say toughest 'cos Russell's at my window right now, pointing and laughing."

Verity Lambert dies. Verity was amongst other things the first producer of Doctor Who and essentially co-created the series along with writer Sydney Newman and the pilot director Waris Hussein. She would later have a hand in bringing everything from Minder to Jonathan Creek to the screen. Worth noting how rare it was in the sixties to have a female producer at the BBC and although Sydney was dead against having bug eyed monsters in the series, she convinced him that this idea that Terry Nation was having about something called Daleks would be a really good thing to do.

The Doctor is in! After passing on the series last year, the Sci-Fi Channel has decided to bring the BBC's new version of Doctor Who to American viewers. Neither the Beeb's news release or Sci-Fi's explain the turnaround. In any case, good news for stateside Whovians, as well as those who have not yet made the good Doctor's acquaintance.
