The film is constructed entirely from hundreds of hours of archival footage of the black power movement, footage that’s not just rare, but unseen; it was shot by a Swedish news crew in the 1960s and 1970s, then left untouched in a Swedish TV station’s cellar for 30 years, where it was discovered by documentary filmmaker Göran Hugo Olsson.' Finnish YouTube user Ishexan has uploaded seven English subtitled movies in parts: Broken Blossoms (1919), Aelita (1924), The Gipsy Charmer (1929), The Tragedy of Elina (1938), The Activists (1939), The Wooden Pauper's Bride (1944), and Sampo (1959), which is based on the epic poem The Kalevala. The films are mostly Finnish, though Aelita is a silent Russian sci-fi film, and Sampo was a joint Finnish and Soviet production. More film clips inside (mostly Finnish documentaries and "dorky musical numbers"). Other videos are collected into the following playlists: History of Finland (16 videos) Finnish Folklore (6 videos) Carelian Wedding (1921) (5 videos) Finns in The US (1948) (7 videos) Dorky Musical Numbers: Finland (35 videos) Dorky International Music Numbers (37 videos) Plus, three episodes of The Munsters (My Fair Munster, Call of the Wild, and Mummy Munster). Some of these videos have been identified as NBC Universal content, so there might be a country-based content block on them for you, depending on where you are. --------------------------------- The Gipsy Charmer (sp) is not well documented in any convenient single-link format online, but in coverage of the larger career of Teuvo Tulio. The Kalevala was previously covered on MetaFilter (twice, in fact). US viewers might find the film familiar, if they've seen the MST3k-ification of The Day the Earth Froze, the US dubbed and edited version of the film. Most of these films were recorded from the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE), though some of the short documentaries seem to be home-made or low-budget. And I don't know why Llama Agility is the featured video on Ishexan's profile, when the video was posted by another user.

It's been estimated that the average UK adult is now registered on more than 700 databases and is caught many times each day by nearly five million CCTV cameras. So how hard would it be for an average citizen to disappear completely? That’s the subject of a new documentary film: Erasing David, (Trailer: YouTube, Vimeo) which premieres this evening in the UK on More4. It's also now available worldwide online at the iTunes store and through several Video On Demand services, as well as through Good Screenings. Erasing David: Facebook / Twitter / Downloadable PDFs can be found at their Protect Yourself page / Education Materials Review: Erasing David and the fight for privacy rights. Good Screenings is a new site dedicated to facilitating screenings of "the best, award-winning social justice filmmaking... films that aren't just good - they do good too..." The CCTV camera statistics in the first line of this FPP were lifted from the TimesOnline article, and may have been sourced from the documentary's marketing materials. In the interest of accuracy, I rephrased their mention as an estimate, because the official statistics which have been released lead to varying conclusions as to how many cameras and databases there really are.

Hippie Masala [masala is the Hindi word for spice mix] is a documentary which poignantly depicts the lives of a handful of old hippies from different countries, who not only remained in India but also remained in the caricature roles of a small few in those days. These are, in some ways, lost souls stuck in the amber of the 1960's and 70's and this movie offers glimpses into their lives now. SnagFilms also has 510 other excellent documentaries to watch for free online. "In the 1960s and 1970s thousands of hippies journeyed East in the search for enlightenment, free drugs or a ‘pure’ life. Indian peasants assumed that a severe drought in the West was the reason for their migration. India’s holy men saw it, more accurately, as a search for spirituality. Most moved back to their home countries after a few months or years. Some stayed for good. HIPPIE MASALA shows aging flower children who, after fleeing Western civilization, found a new home in India." About the directors, Ulrich Grossenbacher and Damaris Luthi. Robert Geesink is one the Western old timers who stayed in India. He's a Dutch painter and quite accomplished. Here is a short clip from Hippie Masala about his work and life.

Sequel to Guy Catches Sunglasses With Face It wasn't too long ago that we had a look at Guy Catches Sunglasses With Face. Here is the sequel, Bobbing For Glasses. Both videos are from artist Ben Kaller, who has worked on most of Spike Jonze' best stuff, among other things. His brother Jeremy Kaller is also a talented director, who recently released a a documentary about the progressive recycling scene in San Francisco.
