"I believe that some things should not be told, they should be felt."

Almost 100,000 dogs are euthanised every year in Taiwan. The dogs caught on the street are kept in the kennel for twelve days waiting for adoption. If nobody rescues them over that period of time, they are put down. The ones who are seriously ill and suffering are put down immediately. Yun-Fei Tou is the author of Memento Mori, a series of portraits of these Taiwanese stray dogs taken just before being euthanised. [more inside]

DO NOT OPEN - PUPPIES INSIDE

Here's a video of Husky pups swarming through a door vent, which seems upbeat and fun thanks to the indie-pop instrumental score. See a video (.MP4, 7.4mb) closer (Daily Mail) to the source, and it seems a bit more menacing without any audio. Let's amp up the terror and set the scene to The Walking Dead's theme song. If you need a come-down, enjoy Wrigley at the movies, a man and his boss's dog re-enacting romantic movie moments.

"Are you my mother?"

Meg, an 11-year-old yellow Lab and her human, David Jackson, found a tiny baby bunny in the back yard—and two ravens looming overhead. Because Jackson was raised near the woods and knew the birds were a threat, he decided to hang around with Meg and watch the bunny until the ravens were gone. While they waited, Meg and the bunny began to play. [more inside]

Pooch Pool Party

The last day of the summer swim season in Idaho isn't a day for people; the parks department in Nampa turns their waterpark over to dogs only, giving them a chance to splash and play. Thanks in part to the funds raised here, the parks department recently opened a pond in their oldest dog park. Nearby Boise has followed suit with a day at one of their outdoor pools. But that's not the only place a dog can play in an aquatic environment... [more inside]

Cats and dogs, living together, mass adorableness

Side effects of growing up with Bull Mastiffs, this cat thinks she is one. She's cute, but she's no Rosie. As a kitten, she was save by the maternal Lilo the Husky (Facebook), a cat-loving Husky (YouTube) who lives in a household (Instagram) with other feral cats that are trapped, neutered and released (TNR) or raised and a couple more Huskies. Now a much larger cat, Rosie likes to walk and hike with the Huskies.

PSA: Dogs Hate Hugs

Dogs are technically cursorial animals, which is a term that indicates that they are designed for swift running. That implies that in times of stress or threat the first line of defense that a dog uses is not his teeth, but rather his ability to run away. Behaviorists believe that depriving a dog of that course of action by immobilizing him with a hug can increase his stress level and, if the dog's anxiety becomes significantly intense, he may bite.

A Farewell to the Dog Who Helped Him Off the Streets

Raymond Goynes went uptown to see Sonja one last time on March 8, a sunny Tuesday morning. He let himself into her owner’s penthouse duplex in Hell’s Kitchen. Sonja, an 11-year-old wheaten terrier, was sprawled on the wool kilim rug in the living room. Her head rested on a towel.
“Look who it is, look who it is!” Sonja’s owner, Mary Kilty, cried.
“Miss Sonja!” Mr. Goynes called out. For the first time in an hour or so, the little tan dog raised her head.

The Dark Underside of the Show-Dog World

Cat Funerals in the Victorian Era: "During the early 19th century, it was not uncommon for the mortal remains of a beloved pet cat to be buried in the family garden. By the Victorian era, however, the formality of cat funerals had increased substantially. Bereaved pet owners commissioned undertakers to build elaborate cat caskets. Clergymen performed cat burial services. And stone masons chiseled cat names on cat headstones." Ends with a lovely elegy for Peter, aged 12, by poet Clinton Scollard. [more inside]

She’s actually really lazy

Ludivine, a two-and-a-half-year-old hound dog, was let out of the house in Elkmont, Alabama, to do her business. Prone to roaming around town at will, Ludivine snuck out of the backyard and made her way to the starting area of the inaugural Trackless Train Trek Half Marathon about a quarter mile away. Ludivine proceeded to mingle with the runners, run the entire 13.1-mile course, cross the finish line in an unofficial 1:32:56, and have a medal draped over her floppy brown ears—all without her owner, April Hamlin, realizing she had wandered off in the first place.

How smart animal shelters aim for zero kill.

How smart animal shelters aim for zero kill. Some shelters are euthanizing far fewer animals than others, and it's not because they have more funding: they're adopting different, smarter practices, including feline Trap-Neuter-Return, emphasizing spay and neuter in communities, encouraging owner retention, and making adoptions easier. Initiatives like Target Zero and The Million Cat Challenge help make it possible for cities achieve greater live-release rates. "In five years, Jacksonville’s shelter went from saving less than 30 percent of its animals to saving 90 percent, including many more dogs than before."
