In 2003, the BBC reported that a population explosion of Great Gerbils had destroyed more than 4 million hectares of grasslands in China's north-western Xinjiang region -- an area about the size of Switzerland. By 2005 the damage covered 5 million hectares, and the Xinjuang Regional Headquarters for Controlling Locusts and Rodents were reported to be breeding and attracting pairs of golden eagles to curb the gerbil population. So McSweeney's Joshuah Bearman was assigned to the story. Despite the collapse of the nesting tree earlier in the year this remarkable couple have built a new nest in double-quick time and recently laid two eggs. Through EagleCAM, you have a unique and amazing opportunity to follow their progress as we count down to the hatching of the first egg [S1] on or around the 14th of August [and the second, S2, the next day]. The (wild, resident) White-Bellied Sea Eagles at Birds Australia's Sydney Olympic Park Discovery Centre have hatched two chicks. The live feed under the "EagleCAM" link will be black and white IR night vision for a few hours yet, but the brooding parent can be surprisingly active at night. Live feed of a bald eagle nest! Over the past month a nest was built and the eagles are currently sitting on some eggs. A different pair, featured here last year, are in the process of constructing a new nest. The first cam is featured on my office's intranet home page, so I watch them frequently. Despite the eagle's constant stern-faced expression, it should be remembered that it's "neither a hawk nor a dove, but an eagle" that may or may not support war.

Eagle Cam in Sutton, Oklahoma. Only one egg (out of three laid) has hatched this year, but the single eaglet is doing well, and both parents are keeping a close eye on his (her?) progress. Live during the day, and the day's tape is replayed at night, Oklahoma time, for folks tuning in late. warning - can be addictive. Previously, in Maine.

Can't you see? There's one in a tree, and he's looking at me. A St. Louis TV station took a bunch of footage of bald eagles for a segment, but half of the interview footage was lost due to microphone problems, so they improvised. What resulted is a sweet-ass-sweet musical montage on the awesomeness of eagles. [YouTube filter, by the way, via the boing.]
