I've only ever seen 70 & 80's era New York in movies and I've never really thought about their source of inspiration. Until I saw this.(a few graphic photos on that last link)

Back Porch Videos "Way before the internet and YouTube, there was public access cable television. And so...we proudly present these vintage clips from the 1980's alternative music video show, "Back Porch Video." Premiering January 28, 1984, this pioneering program was crewed and hosted by high-school students from the Dearborn/Detroit, Michigan area. Stay tuned for the ultimate best (and ultimate tacky) in retro-80's videos - from pop alternative, to hair bands, to rock and some of the most exclusive hardcore!!!"
Almost 700 videos of post punk brilliance.

Retrostatic is a treasure trove of 80's (and 90's) TV commercials--from PSAs of singing pills to the Post cereal Create-A-Villain contest (and so much more). Also, cartoons, with descriptions and opening sequences of everything from Alf Tales to Thundercats.

"...he just loved the genre of game shows." Peter Tomarken was killed today in a plane crash in Santa Monica, CA, while on an errand of mercy. As the host of the original Press Your Luck, he was associated with some wacky (and later controversial) Eighties television.

The Austin-Rover web resource A complete resource of the cars of British car manufacturer Austin Rover. Read the history of such design classics as the Morris Marina, the Austin Maxi, and my own first car, the Austin Allegro. No wonder Britain no longer has much of a car industry.

80's ROCK IS DEAD (LONG LIVE 80'S ROCK) Holy crap, I saw an ad on the teevee for a new BOSTON album called Corporate America. A new Boston album! A self-described "in your face" indictment of big business and what it is doing to our world. You'll be comforted to know that the music is still way overproduced and the political content has all the impact of Mike + the Mechanics "Silent Running." In other words — don't change a thing! It turns out all the big 80's rockers have 2002 albums, even the little king himself: Phil Collins. Testify. I'll be damned if one of his new songs doesn't sound like "Take Me Home (Redux)." Def Leppard's "X"? Same. Poison's "Hollyweird"? Same! Poison even does a party rock version of The Who's "Squeeze Box." Wonderful. Bon Jovi, Rush, Robert Plant — what year is this again? Who cares. Let's rock. As soon as this Family Ties is over.

Growing up in the MTV generation. Reading the earlier Eminem link just reminded me how much MTV has been part of my socialization as a child of the 80's. MTV is a business that has effected not only how i look at the world, but also how i view myself. I'm just curious if there's anyone else out there who have felt so strongly shaped by (through reaction to or following of) MTV.

Dan Goodsell and Dallas Poague bring my (and maybe your) childhood back to life with page after page filled with images of delightful (and sometimes creepy) memorabilia. Oh, the hours I spent commanding a Mission to Mars while sugared-up on Dinky Donuts and Rootin' Tootin' Raspberry FunnyFace.

A taste of Nostalgia... while it's not really an informative MeFi posted link, the list of commercials brings back memories. It's too bad there aren't any clips. Are any of these familiar to you?

I found this site's list of 90's remakes at hack the planet. Having grown up in the eighties, I knew about half these songs were remakes from my childhood, but since I was a wee boy for much of the 70's, I didn't know some of today's songs were redone oldies. The coolest thing about this list is I could find any interesting songs as mp3 using napster. Every search resulted in a successful download. Even the Cure's 'Love Song' done by Tori Amos on the radio was on my hard drive a minute after I read about it on that page.
