The operators of
FleetCenter in Boston decided it'd be a good idea to auction off single-day rights to rename the stadium and give the proceeds
to charity. Honorable idea. Unfortunately for them,
the winner of Monday, February 28, was the infamously crude news site
Fark. They held
a competition this afternoon to decide what the name should be. The winning entry: "Fark.com
UFIA Arena".

Followup:
Wired runs an article called "Fark Sells Out, France Surrenders". Drew Curtis writes a
response (note the sycophantic totalfarkers and more annoyed normal-farkers) -- but, as the article says, "when pressed on the issue, Curtis
refused to deny that Fark accepts payment for placement of links". Was this really a case of one sales rep getting "a little overenthusiastic"? Is Drew ever actually going to deny selling Fark out, or will he just keep writing non-responses detailing his plans for selling it out even more in the future?

As Texas Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos said of his Republican colleagues: "They don't want to govern. They want to rule." An apt quote regarding the sea change in American politics found in an enlightening article about the current state of pork barrel politics. I'm going to pinpoint that change as being the 1994 election when the Republicans gained control of Congress. Ever since then, it seems like the welfare of the American people wasn't only low on the politician's priority list, but it plain dropped off...and the PORK found in this batch of legislation has done nothing to disabuse me of that notion.
As an aside, I think I've found my new favorite texan (HA, like there's many),
Molly Ivins.

Have you or your neighbors killed any kittens lately? Way back in the mists of time, a
farkism combined a kitty with a couple of
domo-kuns and came up with a saying equating
masturbation with killing a kitty.
This site has taken the concept and is attempting to make it into a community weblog -- except the community is limited to those who are taking
solo flights into orgasm.
The site seems almost innocent, at least now (though it'll probably get over-run with explicit commercial grossness in a while).
Although the interface is nowhere near as clean, my experience with the site reminded me of the early days of amihotornot. I was at it for hours, tripping out on who was masturbating in my state, and what they were thinking, let along who was doing what in other places all over the world (not many global participants, yet).
With this wierd mixture of deeply personal revelations and total anonymity, is this one of those things that only the internet can do? Or am I a total git for thinking this is interesting? (via

Ted Rall says that college loans are killing America. I'm inclined to agree. At just $14,736, I'm on the lighter-side of college loan debt, but being a single father, I have a hard time making a dent. Ted makes some salient points about young adults who are struggling to make money in a recession. They don't work for the Peace Corps, they don't volunteer, etc. Even China criticizes America on our insistence that students endebt themselves to corporations just for education.(via

MeFi Users: You're Preapproved! Plastic begs for users, takes shots at MetaFilter with lines such as: "Plastic: the MetaFilter that doesn't reminisce about its 'golden era', three times a week!" and "Plastic: The MetaFilter that's already had weeks of unexplained downtime." Is offering "karma" and "mod points" going to make you switch? Isn't complaining about a lost golden era better than never having one at all?

Dallas Mavericks coach Mark Cuban wants a little privacy. Is he entitled? As a general rule, I don't like Mark Cuban. Prior to reading this article (from
Dallas Online), which
fark.com described as "Transcript of Mark Cuban heated call," I expected to groan at more of his braying and
obnoxious behavior. But in large part, I can't deny that Cuban may have a point in asking a reporter not to publish information on Cuban's relationship with his fiancee. Much of what he said makes sense, or at very least raises interesting questions about the rights of the press and a celebrity-hungry public over those of the public figure (and his friends and family). Who's right here, and who's wrong? (via

"Jingle Bells" is the first Christmas song we learn. It's the Christmas song no one ever forgets. I've pointed to fark.com before, because I find it one of the more amusing weblogs. While I was searching for pointers to MetaFilter today, I noticed they have
their referer logs in a public folder. What's great about it is seeing the search terms used on AOL's search engine. There's a few gems like "pokemon porn," "catholic girls playing in the mud," and "how to fake your own death." I see similar AOL searches in MetaFilter's logs. AOL is used by some freaky people.
