The Ad Generator
is a generative artwork that explores how advertising uses and manipulates language. What it actually does is that it randomizes words and structures from real advertising slogans and pairs them with related images from Flickr, generating fake ads on the fly.

is the name of an abandoned open-air swimming pool built directly between the ocean & the cliffs along the coast of the Isle of Man. Constructed in 1899, it operated until 1990, surviving briefly near the end as a fish hatchery. This Flickr photoset
is the only collection of images I could find that do justice to the juxtaposition of sunny/nature setting & creepy
that the place gives off.

is an all too brief Flickr Photoset of Penguin Book cover designs from decades past. For those interested, this book
is highly recommended.

Get Well Roger Flickr Group.
Roger Ebert, still recovering from an arterial burst following surgery to remove cancer near his jaw, could use a little love. Show some, and be a gigantic nerd, by taking a picture of yourself giving a "thumbs up" and uploading it to this Flickr Group. They'll be sending the whole spiel
to the good sir himself after they have enough pictures uploaded. Previously.

In 1899, the core of downtown Seattle burned to the ground. While the shops quickly rebuilt & re-opened, the city itself took the opportunity to rebuild the streets some 36 feet higher than they previously had been (ostensibly to combat water pressure/sea level issues), meaning that pedestrians climbed ladders to go between street level and building entrances. Eventually, the city laid down sidewalks up on the new street level, and the underground city
was all but forgotten
. Today, via a building
in Pioneer Square, you can still tour what remains
of the abandoned underground
up at the people above
through the opaque glass

Art teacher in hot water over topless photos
- Meet Tamara
, a 29 year old art teacher at Austin High School (notable alumni
) in Austin, TX. She's in danger of losing her job with the Austin independent School District over inappropriate photos posted to her Flickr account
(may be NSFW). "I'm an artist and I'm going to participate in the arts," Hoover said. "If that's not something they want me to do then I want to be told that. I don't feel as if I was doing anything that was beyond expectations."

I'm a huge fan of clever unintended uses for things, and loloroy's favorites
reuses a page/interface I've seen hundreds of times before in a cute way. It may take a second to figure out, but should be worth it [via tmn

Self-portrait: A portrait an artist makes using himself or herself as its subject, typically drawn or painted from a reflection in a mirror.
There are many famous painted self portraits,
but now that everyone has a digital camera, more and more photographic self portaits are popping up everywhere
. Whether you think of it as vanity
, or just art, it is hard to deny that there are a lot of interesting
shots out there. Sure, there are plenty of arm
angles, but there is also work being done with black and white
, and, of course
. Even photoshop
is used sometimes
. People are still speculating
on what exactly all these pictures mean, but I think it is clear that from totally innocent
to intensely personal
, self portraits are here to stay.
