Fox "upset-the-White-House-won't-call-it" News

Fox News's bent on the news is well known, but recently the White House has begun actively excluding the network, including skipping Fox's Chris Wallace on a recent round of Sunday morning news shows. “We simply decided to stop abiding by the fiction ... that Fox is a traditional news organization.” says White House Depty Communications Director Pfeiffer (as has Press Secretary Gibbs and others). The responses range from concern about an attempt to control the media to a feeling that it's about time. Is it just about Fox's anti-Obama pundits, or is it also about Fox's consistent errors and misinformed viewership? Or is the White House attempting containment so that Fox's ratings-gold style and ideas don't take over the rest of the press?

Internal drama at Fox: longtime Hollywood columnist Roger Friedman fired - or not? - for posting a review on FoxNews.com of 20th Century Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which leaked onto the internets April 1. He apparently liked it. But Fox is freaking out about the leak, more than a month before the theatre premiere, and the FBI has conducted raids. Speculation about what happened here.

Fox News, keeping it classy, recently aired a comedy segment ridiculing the Canadian military's efforts in Afghanistan. On the overnight programme, host Greg Gutfeld and friends joked about Canada's plan to pull out troops in 2011 to "do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white Capri pants." He also suggested invading Canada seeing as how they "have no real army", and mocked the last name of one of the Canadian generals as being unmasculine. The Fox segment has been one of the leading news stories in Canada for the past 48 hours. There is also some discussion States-side, although MSNBC decided to lead off with the glib title "Fox News sorry for dissing Canadian army, eh?" Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Mackay has stated "it is insensitive and it is, in fact, disgusting given the timing (on the day of his statement, four more dead Canadian soldiers were being brought back to Canada for burial). Meanwhile, Gutfeld has issued a statement of apology, claiming that the program is meant as "a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humorous and ridiculous manner." He also posted on Twitter: "My apologies to the Canadian military, they probably could at least beat the Belgians." Meanwhile comedian Doug Benson, who appeared with the Red Eye discussion panel and claimed during the segment that he didn't even know Canada was involved in the war in Afghanistan, has had comedy dates in Alberta canceled. FoxNews copy-n-pastes Focus on the Family propaganda as news. Longtime MeFi user owillis caught the fact that FoxNews took the press release of a supposedly independent student pro-life group called Live Action/Live Action Films and essentially reprinted it verbatim. Bad journalism, sure... but how does this little student group afford to send its people across the country to try to entrap Planned Parenthood workers, and how do they get big-name attention on FoxNews and other major conservative media sources? Well, it turns out that Live Action was rather quietly founded by Stephen Reed, who is a key surrogate of James Dobson/ Focus on the Family/ the Family Research Council... and the media sources in question have close ties to Dobson and a longstanding history of parroting his talking points.

I think that we can all agree that the best-selling duo in rock history, Hall & Oates, are pretty freaking awesome. They recorded some of the greatest songs in pop history, including "Rich Girl", "Kiss on My List", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", and "You Make My Dreams Come True". They were incredible live. And they participated in the greatest back-alley song-writing duel of 1978. Also Daryl Hall considers himself a modern-day warlock. However, last night the world learned that Hall and Oates's are sad. They are extremely saddened by the upcoming departure of Alan Colmes from his show Hannity and Colmes, and they have chosen to express their sadness through song. Sean Hannity actually replied to Hall & Oates's heartfelt tribute to the departure of his colleague, stating “I was actually thinking of Jon [Stewart] as a co-host but I needed someone who could be smart and funny without 50 writers and two has-been rockers who are badly in need of Botox.” via.

So, for about two years now, Will Chapman of BrickArms has been creating a wide variety of custom Lego minifigures, ranging from World War II soldiers (both Axis and Allies) to a certain copyrighted British Secret Service agent. One of Chapman's more popular creations is "Mr. White," a "bandit" brimming with weapons (including an AK-47 and RPG) and grenades. This week, the Sun ran a story. Then Fox News ran another. Meet Andy Martin, aka Anthony R. Martin-Trigona, perennial losing candidate for public office and one of the truly great vexatious litigators. Martin-Trigona is known in the legal community for his prolific pro se litigation, for his frequently anti-Semitic briefs (I propose a constitutional amendment to seize the property of the Jews, he once wrote in a bankruptcy filing) and for tactics like this:

To illustrate the need to protect the identity of the judges the appeals court cited [original RTF document] what it called an "outrageous action" taken by Mr. Martin to get back at the federal judge whose rulings displeased him. The court said Mr. Martin had sought to intervene in the judge's divorce case and have himself appointed as the guardian for the judge's children. (from a 1993 WSJ article)

Elsewhere, he's better known for his many quixotic campaigns for public office in Connecticut, Illinois, Florida, and New York. Chicago blogger and journalist Steve Rhodes quotes from a 2006 Chicago Sun-Times profile:

Just minutes earlier, the Near North Side resident was relating how he spent most of 2003 scouring holes in Iraq with two dogs - and pinpointed Saddam Hussein’s whereabouts a full two months before U.S. troops. It was what I would call a typical Andy Martin experience, he said.

Last year The Nation identified Martin-Trigona as the source of the rumors that Barack Obama is a secret Muslim (he's happy to take credit: There's nothing sinister here. I was thinking of running for Senate and was looking for a story to put some sizzle on the plate, he told the Washington Post in June). And last Sunday, Martin-Trigona appeared in the Fox/Sean Hannity documentary Obama & Friends: The History of Radicalism to speculate on early links between Obama and William Ayers: I think a community organizer, in Barack Obama's case, was somebody that was in training for radical overthrow of the government. Obama communications director Robert Gibbs responds to Hannity.

The leak was telling the press that laws were being broken--FISA subverted--so that undermining national laws becomes a crime only when it is revealed? A CIA officer has been relieved of his duty after being caught leaking classified information to the media. Citing the Privacy Act, the CIA would not provide any details about the officer's identity or assignments.
