LHC webcam

 LHC Webcams. There's been a lot of LHC news lately but a less-publicized series of Compact Muon Solenoid proton collision tests is scheduled for today, and CERN has been kind enough to set up a live streaming webcam to watch the CMS in action. (There's also a view of the parking lot but I think that's more so underground-bunkered LHC staff can see the weather.) It's fairly dull viewing but if you're interested in the science of it all, it's great nerdy fun. Maybe you'll even see a black hole or two. ;)

Big Bad Wolves Need Not Apply

 The first little pig built his house out of straw [previously].
The second little pig built his house out of sticks.
The third little pig built his house out of bricks;
but the relatively unknown fourth little pig built several structures of all sizes out of mud (and straw), and he wasn't a hippy. Cob building is relatively simple, inexpensive, sturdy and beautiful. It allows you to create free-form structures, it doesn't require a lot of knowledge and, best of all, everyone (including the kids) can get involved.

The canonical resource for cob building is probably The Cob Builders Handbook, available directly from the author, or via Amazon if you're so inclined.

 Symmetry Explorer grabs photos from Flickr on any subject you like (e.g. kittens, hamsters, whatever) and then presents them as pairs of mirrored halves.
China's No. 1 Internet TV station

 SexyBeiJin ('¬) Weddings Gone Wild Beijing Vs. Hong Kong Lost in Translation

The Lost in Translation piece (above) introduces Beijing folks and the English names they have chosen for themselves. One "auntie" goes by the name "Smacker" (it sounds nice), and so SexyBeijing develops an entirely new segment called Ask Smacker.

Hosted by Anna Sophie Loewenberg, the show has a frequently updated blog and downloadable video and audio podcasts. [YouTube Channel] Sexy Beijing is a show about dating, love and youth culture in the People's Republic of China. Follow the adventures of Sufei as she looks for love on the dusty streets of the big BJ and meets a lot of cool characters along the way.

SexyBeijingTV also features other interesting programs about contemporary life in China.

 Narayan, Narayan. I was Atal Bihari some time back, now I am Manmohan. I may be Manmohan now but sometimes I am Sonia. I am the variable constant in Indian politics the Prime Minister, Pradhan Mantri. Soon I may be Advani or Rahul or Modi. Or maybe I may become Laloo…that will be the day of prayer in India. But if I become Mayawati will I need a surgery... A log of the nation in hypertext marked lies.
