A contributor to the Gameological Society visits his local video game store in Nairobi to demonstrate the sort of games he found there, finding gems like "Guitar Hero: Beatles and Friends" (actually, mostly Bahasa pop music), "Robocop" (with extra rainbow), and what might just be the ne plus ultra of video game mods: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas: Kirk Douglas.

The creation of Duncan Harris, Dead End Thrills uses the techniques of photography - lighting and positioning - and an array of cheats to remove HUDs, arrange elements and polish resolutions to create gorgeous images from video games. The Mirror's Edge gallery contains wallpapers based on DICE's view of the Swedish Modernist dystopia. This collection revels almost obscenely in the detail and reflection of the processor-melting iCEnhancer 1.2 mod for Grand Theft Auto IV. Harris has also retrieved and reassembled the lost 3D art of Blade Runner, from Westwood Studio's atmospheric and ambitious 1997 "simultanequel" to Ripley Scott's film, set in Syd Mead's visual world.

Game programmer and designer Mike Dailly has been making games since he was 14, back in 1984. It was then that he met David Jones, Russell Kay and Steve Hammond at the Kingsway Amateur Computer Club, a group that gathered at Kingsway Technical College in Dundee, Scotland. These four chaps would go on to form DMA Design, home to Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto, amongst other games. Dailly has been sharing stories and materials from the archives of DMA, including The Complete History of DMA Design, The Complete History of Lemmings (previously), GTA prototypes, graphics and early game design docs (when it was called "Race 'n' Chase"), and more.... The GTA graphics and design docs are from Dailly's flickr account, where he has also posted more Lemmings material (including the Lemmings 2 comic), and pics from other early DMA Design games as well as early drafts from games that were never made. Dailly also has a YouTube account where he has uploaded old gameplay clips and demos, plus a bunch of clips from Tanktics. Bonus Bits * Mike Dailly has a blog that he's updated since 2006, where he posts thoughts and discussions on games and systems, both modern and past. * According to an wiki page that is short on citations, the name DMA was originally taken from the Amiga programming manuals simply because it sounded cool and did not actually mean anything. * If all this talk of GTA is getting you looking for your old discs, Rockstar Games offers the original GTA and GTA 2 as a free download (along with a 3rd DMA Design game, Wild Metal). Download links are sent to an email address, and the games have been modified to run on modern systems. Arguably the most addictive song on the formidable 214-song GTA IV soundtrack is "Schweine" by Russian singer/actress Glukoza ("selling music without sex since 2003"). Unfortunately, it's not on the official soundtrack disc (which, in all fairness, must have been hell to make), but Rockstar has made the in-game station playlists available on Amazon.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has refused to rate Manhunt 2, Rockstar Games' latest controversial offering, effectively banning it from sale in the United Kingdom. This surprising decision comes only weeks before the game's July 10th release date. The last game to be blocked from sale in the UK was the 1997 classic Carmageddon. Appeal remains a possibility for Rockstar, “although it sometimes takes up to two months to get this happening.”

One week after publicly declaring his lack of support for our troops, LA Times columnist & professional nerd humorist Joel Stein comes out in favor of Grand Theft Auto's Hot Coffee mod, which has recently been the focus of a lawsuit brought by the city of Los Angeles against Rockstar Games, the makers of GTA. "Because if these teen computer geniuses are given the opportunity to unlock a video-game sex scene, then they'll be just one step away from breaking the code that allows them to type dirty words into Google."

Oh great merciful heavens! Who, oh who, will protect the dear children from the rampant sexual content that lies buried in... The Sims 2? According to Miami attorney Jack Thompson, it's worse than the now-infamous Hot Coffee mod for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that Hillary Clinton has made such a fuss about.

His claim is that behind the pixellated screen placed by the game in front of nude characters is full, anatomically-correct, genital detail, and a cheat code can remove that easily. Electronic Arts maintains that behind the screen is only Ken-And-Barbie smoothness. (Should be easy enough to check out, anyone?)
