The Mutual Tattooed Penis Admiration Society: Really fascinating archival footage from the 1980s of Sailor Sid, Jack Yount, and others. This is old-school tattooing and piercing, anchored in gay and S&M subcultures, just before it went mainstream. NSFW, and there are far more NSFW things a click away on these links. You will notice that tattooing on the cusp of the HIV/AIDS epidemic was sometimes done to a different standard of hygiene than is the case 25 years later. The affection and trust between the men in the videos really shines through, though. Sailor Sid's papers are now a part of the Leather Archives and Museum in Chicago; Jack Yount's collection became part of the Shawn Porter Collection which sadly appears to be offline after a crash. "Has Manhunt Destroyed Gay Culture?". It's a great article, but what happened after its publication may be just as interesting. So the post-publication story goes like this: Out publishes its incisive thinkpiece about Manhunt.net [NSFW], the biggest gay hook-up site on the net, and its effects on gay culture. Some of the article devotes itself to the political leanings of the co-founders, Larry Basile and Jonathan Crutchley. Andy Towle at Towleroad takes that bit of info and reports that Crutchley has had donated $2300 to the McCain campaign. Not too many people are happy to hear that. Not his co-founder, not the McCain campaign, and certainly not the members, many of whom cancel their subscriptions. Crutchley subsequently steps down as chairman of the company, igniting another controversy over whether the actions of the gay community constitute a political witchhunt. Yeah, this is kinda two separate posts in one, but oh well.

1995 versus 2008. Thirteen years later, the media once again devours its own tail reacting to "I Kissed a Girl." Jill Sobule's hit was banned by Southern radio stations, but greatly endeared her to the gay community. Katy Perry's song and persona are a lot more problematic. As enlightening as the past couple of decades have been for the public, casual and careless gay stereotyping still commonly surfaces in pop culture. For example, this Snickers commercial in which Mr. T attacks an effeminate speedwalker, calling him "A disgrace to the man race" -- which was banned before it made the leap from British to American television.
