Macskafogó ("Cat Trap") is a feature-length Hungarian animated film. Released in 1986, it's also available in a dubbed English version titled Cat City. [more inside]

Click judiciously; the site is called instant epilePSY and not without reason. If you need annoying and occasionally baffling animated GIFs culled from Hungarian music videos, however, you'll be well served. (Some of the loopings are fairly clever.)

The 2009 Hungarian Press Photography Awards have been announced. The overall winner is a stunning series of Roma (Gypsy) grieving by the Hungarian photographer Béla Szandelszky. My favorite is the one of three woman grieving. The site is in Hungarian but Google translate does a reasonable job (to English anyway). And of course there is the inevitable Flash navigation to come to grips with. All the photos demonstrate that the rich tradition of Hungarian photography that includes André Kertész, Robert Capa, László Moholy Nagy and Marton Munkascsi to name but a few of the greatest photographers of last century, is very much alive and well.

You'll rarely see it staged, so might as well enjoy Bartók's lone opera, Duke Bluebeard's Castle in a beautifully filmed version on YouTube. Libretto in Hungarian, English. And a little introduction and analysis, with a particular eye toward the cryptic prologue.

The Origo Gallery's recent exhibition features Gyorgy Kemenyi's new works, but for a chronological context it's best to start with his earlier exhibition. The Gallery's archives provide an interesting cross section of a few Hungarian contemporary artists.

Andre Kertesz was a master of photography with a career spanning 70 years. His images manage the seemingly impossible of being iconic images of the ordinary and mundane. Exhibition currently at Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
