K-E-Y! Y? Because We Will Bury You

Exactly 50 years ago today, Soviet Premier and Cold War Villain Nikita Khrushchev was denied a visit to Disneyland. He was in Southern California as part of a cross-country tour of the U.S.A.* (Can you imagine an enemy of the US doing that today?). The reasons for the denial? Security Logistics and Time Limitations (you have to devote a whole day for The Magic Kingdom). Instead, he visited a sound stage at 20th Century Fox (shooting "Can Can") and a housing development in a San Fernando Valley suburb. The next day, he got a warmer, but semi-stunned, reception in San Luis Obispo, CA. Not the only place that welcomed him. Farmers in Coon Rapids, Iowa were happy to show off American agriculture in an event recently commemorated.

Charles Lane: You Knew the Face

Charles Lane (1905-2007), a character actor since 1931, and one of Hollywood's most recognizable "that guys". Over 350 credits from "It's a Wonderful Life" to "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" to "Petticoat Junction" and a half-dozen different characters on "I Love Lucy". Founding member of the Screen Actors guild, and more, but I'll let Mark Evanier tell you some stories. Here's his 100th Birthday party, and one of his few YouTube clips shows him as Ginger Rodger's 'customer' in "Primrose Path".

Godzilla, Tintin and Daffy

As matteo's thread noted earlier this week, the Godzilla PR Monster is rampaging over the University of Kansas, but that's just a stop on the way to his ultimate destination: The Hollywood Walk of Fame, where the Big Green Guy will get his own star just in time for the premeire of his latest flick, joining previous ficticious recipients Big Bird, Bugs Bunny, Kermit the Frog, Pee-Wee Herman, Mickey Mouse, The Rugrats and Woody Woodpecker (and maybe Clayton Moore as The Lone Ranger), and ahead of Donald Duck.
In other news, The Democratic Republic of Congo is comparing Belgium's foreign minister to Tintin (and not in a nice way).
And Daffy Duck is running for president. (Throwing his beak into the ring?) The state of American politics must be pretty pathetic if Daffy gets the nod over Bugs Bunny...
