'Some bands are ambitious. And then there’s Lazer/Wulf. The concept behind the prog-metal trio’s new album, The Beast Of Left And Right, is more than ambitious; it’s kind of insane. Guitarist Bryan Aiken, bassist Sean Peiffer, and drummer Brad Rice have constructed an entire, full-length work of technical yet melodic metal that forms a palindrome.' They've also attracted attention for having a very famous and unlikely fan. [more inside]

Denis Forkas Kostromitin is a Russian artist that considers himself to be a modern symbolist painter (symbolism mentioned previously). The dark and dreamy quality of his work has lead him to be a frequent collaborator with metal musicians. Here he explains the process that led to the cover of Horseback's Half Blood and recently he was commissioned to create the cover of Polish blackened death metal stalwart, Behemoth's, new album, using lead singer Nergal's own blood.
"I talk about death in my comedy because it is something real, but also something that we don't necessarily like to talk about. That's why death metal talks about it too. Death metal is about when death is occurring, or has occurred, and all the mythology that exists beyond that: demons and zombies and hell. And lots of decomposition. And the music is fascinated with that because it's a fascinating topic: we all think about this stuff. Then the sound of the music matches what the content is: It just wouldn't sound right to have that kind of music paired with lyrics about, say, going to your favorite coffee shop and seeing a cute girl. That just wouldn't work. Although, come to think of it, that would be funny to hear." Reggie Watts is an internationally renowned vocalist/ beatboxer/ musician/ comedian, and an aficionado of death metal, as seen in his review of Exhumed's album, Necrocracy (streaming on Bandcamp)

The chant began less than two minutes into the first song. An undercurrent at first, just a few hecklers. But it got louder with repetition, each wave building on the last. Soon the chant threatened to drown out the band itself.

"I threw up 40 times and was put in the hospital. I felt like I was dying. Our producer's back totally went out completely. He couldn't even move. The whole recording he was on pills and steroids and anything he could do to get through it. On our first day of recording, the engineer's assistant's car got broken into outside the studio, and everything inside it, including, for some reason, every CD he owned, got stolen." While heavy metal comes with a host of occupational hazards, from excessive consumption to accidents on tour, the physical toll that being in the Dillinger Escape Plan has exacted on members sets the band apart. Led by the unique vocal stylings of screeching banshee Udo Dirkschneider, the band forged an instantly recognizable sound and was notorious as one of the decade's fiercest live acts. - AllMusic
