Freakazoid! tells the tale of a hyperactive teen super hero whose personality is a bit of Jerry Lewis, Chris Farley and Batman. The show ran for two seasons from September 9, 1995 to June 1, 1997, with Cartoon Network airing reruns until March 8, 2003, and is available in full, online (YouTube Playlist). The love for the show lives on, with an amateur movie adaptation, memories from the cast, and other bits of show history. The show was initially planned as more of a teenage superhero show, somewhat in the feel of Spiderman, but that changed as things were worked out. In an interview, Bruce Timm said "every time we'd have a meeting with Steven [Spielberg], the concept would kinda change, and it kept leaning more and more towards zany comedy." Some of that original superhero feel came from Mike Allred's Madman. In a Fanboy Radio podcast interview (jump to 1:37:30), Allred says Bruce Timms told him "they had issues of Madman open and were told, 'Do something like this.'" Madman or genius? Well... madman. But being confined to an asylum (with one of his symptoms described as "manic invention") didn't keep Karl Hans Janke from developing elaborate theories of atomic energy, flight, space travel and the history of humanity, creating over 4,000 complex drawings and even models over 40 years of incarceration for paranoid schizophrenia. This PDF (found courtesy of things magazine) is the catalogue of a museum exhibition of Janke's work in Peenemünde in 2007, and features English and German articles and loads of scans of Janke drawings. I don't read German, so I suspect I'm missing all the best bits. I discovered Janke through Cabinet Magazine (previously), which I think is the best periodical in North America at the moment. Incidentally, the link to the gallery from the main page of the Janke site doesn't work; the correct link is this one. There's even a shop if you want your own Venusland poster.

He's the spiritual grandparent of both Cal Worthington (very recently) and Crazy Eddie (previously). He's Earl "MadMan" Muntz, more than a successful car salesman, he was a carmaker, a television pioneer (who coined the abreviation "TeeVee"), car stereo pioneer (for the pre-8-track 4-track tape ), a Verb in Electronic Engineering Lingo, hero of Free Enterprise Land and ad icon in Napolean hat and red longjohns. Sadly, YouTube has none of his old commercials (most of its "Muntz" content involves Nelson), but there was a documentary recently produced about his life. Also notable, the Muntz Mania car show.
