Inspired by a convention in 1999, First Day covers, and his grandfather's autograph collection, Jeremy Adolphson sends off 4x6 index cards to various artists with return postage, hoping for a doodle. 5 years on, he has sixty-five galleries (some NSFW) worth of art to share.

William Schaff makes really good art... Perhaps you recognize his artwork from Songs:Ohia's Magnolia Electric Company release or maybe the beautiful artwork from Godspeed You Black Emperor's Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven either way his site has a huge collection of his scratchboards, paintings, collages, and mail art.

The inventor of mail art and master of performance events he liked to call "nothings", "the most famous unknown artist in the world" has caught my fancy. He called his enigmatic collages "moticos" and stored them in cardboard boxes to be shown in Grand Central Station or on the street.
He playfully hinted numerous times about his mortality; even his closest friends and associates agree that his carefully planned death was his last “nothing".
I can't wait to see How To Draw A Bunny.
Here's an open letter to him.

Nick Bantock's
gorgeous Griffin and Sabine
series is based on
mail art, a
medium
with
a
long history. Developed in the mid-20th century by
Ray
Johnson
and his contemporaries,
today the
community
thrives, with the internet
allowing
dissemination
beyond
the
reach of point-to-point mail.

A.1.Mail Art Archive. This is the first entry for my new blog about my favourite mail art that I have saved over the years ( since 1980 ) but some is even older - I exchanged mail that could be called art even though we knew nothing about the international mail art network at the time. "In the last 13 years I have kept everything you have sent in close to heart and in safe keeping. I now hope to open these files again and share more of the creations given to us by you, the Dead Heads". The keeper of the Dead Files has put online hundreds of emails and newsletters and exuberantly colored and illustrated envelopes and letters from the fans of the Grateful Dead. There are, as you'd expect, many drawings of skeletons and American Beauty roses, but you certainly don't have to be a fan to appreciate all the handiwork, personality, and creativity that went into these. I like the irregularity of the hand drawn lettering. {via coudal}.

Spanish Art is the movement which arises from the ashes of Mail Art. Replacing the old outdated term "mail" with the newer and more conceptually perfect name "Spanish". Paging Monty Cantsin!
