From the where-are-they-now (-and-I-hope-they-are-doing-ok) file:
Jeremy Botter, our medic
man in Iraq, has just released all his posts from Iraq as
a free downloadable PDF. It contains the story of capturing Saddam, getting bombed at camp as soldiers died, and a whole lot of playstation2.

I'm not a fan of followup posts, but this is cool enough to mention. Remember
the challenging question of how to turn $14 into $1,000?
BirdD0g has taken that noodle-scratcher of a problem and turned it into his personal challenge, and he's taking everyone along for the ride at
14bucks.com. He's got until April 15, 2005 to turn it over into a grand, which sounds like plenty of time, but that's a lot of profit to turn over (7000% return on investment). Who wants to take my $14 bet it doesn't happen?

To celebrate
World AIDS Day, MetaFilter is going to focus solely on HIV and AIDS related posts for the next 24 hours. Like last year's
observation on MetaFilter, this year's
Link and Think project asks everyone to think about the issues surrounding this disease, how it has affected you, others, and the world. Feel free to share information on prevention, research, or anything else related to the topic at hand.

Metafilter is going down at 12 noon, PST (about 3 hours from now), and should be back up around 8pm. I just signed up this machine at
TZO.com, so this site should be reachable at
http://metafilter.tzo.com/ once I get it back up. TZO is actually a cool service, I've been running it for almost a year on my home cable modem, which changes IP addresses once a month or so (but thanks to TZO, I can always find it).

MetaTalk is now live. I've been talking about it for a while, and now it's here. The addition of it and the
Changelog does crowd up the menus a bit more, but a redesign is in the works so consider this a temporary inconvenience

Bloat!, which has historically been a site with scathing reviews of popular weblogs, has in recent weeks become a source of excellent opinion and well thought out suggestions. For the first time, MetaFilter gets into the top ten, and I have to say some of the comments are right on the money. I hate posting information about this site on the main page, and T. Radhuis picks up on that. I'll be adding a couple links to the navigation, one being "news' with MetaFilter-centric posts and comments (and yeah, I understand that I just turned this post into another one
about MF, I swear this is the last). I don't know about splitting the comments into good and bad, especially since posters would choose which thread to add their comment (which could be abused).

Note to MF users: posting a link is down for the rest of the day until I rework some of the scripts. Too many "hey look at me" posts for one day, thankyouverymuch. Read
an earlier set of comments to see what's coming soon.

Jason posted some thoughts on the growing popularity of MetaFilter, and how we might be able to handle it. I'd like everyone's opinions on several key points. Read my first comment to see the questions posed to the group.

Me + 2 hours of boredom =
possible MetaFilter redesign. I was thumbing through
this book on my shelf and got inspired. I don't know if it will work with the text-heavy posts though. Maybe with some tweaking, I could get it working. After I get the archives working, I'm going to allow for different page designs in the preferences.

I've pointed to fark.com before, because I find it one of the more amusing weblogs. While I was searching for pointers to MetaFilter today, I noticed they have
their referer logs in a public folder. What's great about it is seeing the search terms used on AOL's search engine. There's a few gems like "pokemon porn," "catholic girls playing in the mud," and "how to fake your own death." I see similar AOL searches in MetaFilter's logs. AOL is used by some freaky people.

I'm adding new functionality to MetaFilter. I'm testing out
a floating, draggable menu for links. The links are static for now, but will be customizable by users. It should work in IE4+ and NS4+, post a comment with your OS/browser if you find any problems. I'm also playing with the stylesheet for this page, since I just noticed the spacing between posts looks awful in IE4.5 on the Mac.
