Pavel Bernek had grand plans for his newly-refurbished, 34-foot sailboat. "He schemed to cross the Atlantic, blow through the Strait of Gibraltar and drop anchor in the Mediterranean Sea, where he hoped his girlfriend would be waiting for him. But here in reality - in Milwaukee - the wounded "Falcon" lies on its side, in shin-deep water, ravaged by more than a month's worth of wintry punches from an ornery Lake Michigan."

“Even if one is not at all in agreement with her, with her politics, her ideology, one cannot help but respect her, admire her, even love her.”* Golda Meir, a key founder and later Prime Minister of Israel, was born on this day in Kiev in 1898. She was famously quotable (though one of her more famous quotes was actually more of a misquote). The University of Wisconsin fascinating set of photos of her life, from her youth to her old age.

Critical Mass in Milwaukee ran into some "problems" with police on the July 29th ride: “I unfortunately chose to lock my bike with a friend and go see what was happening with the group who had been stopped at the yellow light. I ran down the street just in time to see police tackle a man on a bike who had a baby carriage attached to end of his bike. After he was pulled to the ground another officer violently pushed over his baby carriage with the baby inside,” More coverage and some photos.

On the way to work today, I heard an advertisement for "the nation's first ever sex-offender-free subdivision" (link to mov). Milwaukee Ridge, the brainchild of I&S Investments, will be located on the outskirts of Lubbock, Texas, and offer "the best features of a family-friendly lifestyle," including "background checks on adults buying homes and juveniles expected to live in the homes." I can't help but think of Stephenson's burbclaves. When, if ever, does the definition of a private community become a public concern?

Wisconsin strip club owner discovers art. A Milwaukee Common Council committee last week agreed to designate Club Paradise, a strip club in Walker's Point, as a "Center for the Visual and Performing Arts" based on the art collection displayed there. This would allow the club to admit underage customers.

Autistic boy dies at faith healing service 'An 8-year-old autistic boy died during a prayer service at a Milwaukee church that the pastor said was meant to heal him of "spirits," and the pastor's brother is facing child abuse charges...' This is sad. Evil spirits? What can be done to protect children from ill-treatment by religion?

"nearly 20" kids beat man to brain death with bats, shovels and boards Brutal stuff. One of the kids in custody is only 10 years old. The victim had "confronted them for throwing an egg at him and punched one teen in the mouth". They went and organized a mob, and returned, according to the Milwaukee Police. What do you do with a 10 year old murderer, anyway?

One-man news org busts open local pension scam! Bruce Murphy's Milwaukee World website uncovered a story about improprieties in the county pension fund on October 10th of last year while the traditional outlets dawdled until January of this year. Kind of neat to know that all the solo journalism isn't all Matt Drudge "advances" from old media. (via medianews)

Safe House--for the spy in all of us. This spy-themed bar in Milwaukee has apparently been around for decades. Sounds hilarious.

But first, Mr. Phelps, you must find it. . .
