Nothing worse than bad sax.

A handy rating guide to 1980s saxophone solos -- "I realized about 5 years ago that at some point in the 80s, lots of the popular music started incorporating saxophone solos into their songs. Some of them are fine, but most of them are ridiculous to have in the songs. I have attempted to separate the quality and appropriateness of the solos from what I think of the song as a whole..."

His favorite pickup line? "Would you like to see my penis again?"

Imagine if millions of people had seen you naked before you were old enough to say "embarrassing." That's the story of Spencer Elden. [more inside]

The three together is God. That's the same thing with us three.

Imagine being born into a set of triplets. You are all inseparable... for an entire lifetime the three of you live together, work together, play music together... your bond is so unique and people find you so endearing that you all even become famous together. Now imagine that time has passed and you have become a frail 85 year old, left alone for the first time in eight decades... Send Milly Del Rubio a Christmas card. [more inside]

I wish my brother George was here.

In 1956, Time Magazine wrote, "He is the summit of sex—the pinnacle of Masculine, Feminine and Neuter. Everything that He, She or It can ever want." (Wait. Seriously???) Behold the evolution of The Liberace Show: from dapper virtuoso to sequined, wacky showman. [more inside]

I NEEDED THE MONEY!

We've previously agreed that Dr. Nina Simone created some amazing music. As a person, she was openly angry and, yes, a smidgen nuts. Big surprise... she was also not the easiest interview. (Big understatement.)

Mamma mia. She exists!

For many, many years, my very favorite bad singer on this Earth has been Wing. I heart her, and I am actually not alone. Over the last 4 years, the endearingly earnest and impressively prolific Wing has gained international fame and made more money on her recordings than a majority of far, far more talented musicians. Yes, she is an acquired taste & many of you will have a different experience, but whenever I listen to her I smile from ear to ear -- both of which have delicate little streams blood trickling from them at the time. And so now I have the honor of presenting to you without further ado (drum roll please) our special guest entertainer for the day, the woman herself... Wing LIVE in concert. **Waves a lighter in the air**

Hallelujah

"Precious Lord" sung by Mahalia Jackson (mp3)
No artist brought more acclaim to gospel music than Mahalia Jackson (October 26, 1911 – January 27, 1972). Beginning in 1950, her divine (.wav) talents were featured weekly on Studs Turkel's radio program, and through her music and gentle personality she became so beloved worldwide that her funeral rivaled that of royalty. Mahalia sang "Precious Lord" at Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.'s funeral -- at Mahalia's funeral, Aretha Franklin did the honors. Mahalia was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame posthumously in 1997. Word has it she also made a mean okra gumbo.
