Embrace the web! It’s the same mantra that we hear day in, day out, from various sources; always those who have a vested interest in convincing us that artists are not doing so. These people seem to be the pundits, or people who want music to be free, and artists to make money in other ways - either by touring or by ‘monetising their experiential awareness’. Are these people the only people in the world who don’t receive a thousand spams a day from bands on Myspace, from people on Facebook suggesting that they become a fan, from dullards on twitter?

"We call it cyber-bullying and we don't have a law to address it." In the matter of the United States v. Drew (pdf), the misdemeanor charges against Lori Drew have been overturned. Judge George Wu noted that violations of the Terms and Services of a website cannot be considered a crime. A Congresswoman has drafted a bill (pdf) to fill in the gaps, allowing for future cyber-bullying convictions. Previously: (1, 2, 3, 4) Cyber-bullying may affect as many as 1 in 10 students, and is considered a serious problem. The proposed bill seeks to address the issue, but does it really? Judge Wu's written ruling will be filed next week.

Privacy is dead - get over it [part 2] is a talk by private investigator Steve Rambam. It's a talk he has been giving for a number of years where he shows how privacy is being taken away, not by sinister plots but because people are giving it away. With people putting up everything and nothing on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and so on, as well as a growing quantity of data held in private databases, he shows how easy it is to find out enormous amounts of data on just about anyone. All in all the video is three hours long, but if you have the time it's well worth watching. It includes Steve summing up how much info he managed to get on a volunteer in four and a half hours (a lot, everything really). And how he made a bet seeing if the same volunteer could avoid being tracked down by Steve for 60 days (it involved some more stuff, but you'll have to watch the video). This version of the talk was recorded at The Last HOPE conference, where MeFi's own Adam Savage also had a talk.

Twones is a music tracker that monitors Last.FM, YouTube, MySpace, iTunes, Muxtape, and a few other services. It's officially in private beta, but limited signups seem to have opened today (no guarantees as to how long that link will continue to work). It currently only works in Firefox 2.0 and up, as an add-on.

As a result of the Dutch film Fitna, Indonesia has blocked several websites including MySpace and YouTube. This follows hot on the heels of a new bill which could see people face six years of jail time or a 1 billion rupiah fine for being caught sending out porn, “false news” or racial or religious slurs on the Web. The Indonesian government will start censoring the Internet next month with specialised software. Very disappointing for a country which had a reasonably free press.

I was going to share the many amazing videos that StSanders has uploaded to youtube featuring guitar gods like Van Halen and Santana shredding, since they have inexplicably only received scant mention on mefi so far. But StSanders' account has been suspended all all videos have been removed! So in the meantime the best I can offer is the work of John Michael Boling and Javier Morales. They are video artists whose hypnotizing and nostalgic and work can be seen at 53 o's. Hammer films are back! ... The classic British horror film company has returned from the dead with the first new film in 20 years to be first broadcast in instalments via MySpace. This has allowed some news programs to camp it up just a little... See the trailer here. Behind the scenes. Time will tell if the latest venture will be up to the classics of the past such as... Draculawith Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing (recently restored by the BFI), The Curse of Frankenstein (also with Lee and Cushing), The Mummy (Lee and Cushing again), The Hound of the Baskervilles (with yup, you've guess it, Lee and Cushing), She (with Lee, Cushing AND Ursula Andress), The Quatermass Xperiment (The Creeping Unknown in the US), the rather arty Vampire Circus, One Million Years B.C (with Raquel Welch in that fur bikini), The Devil Rides Out (with Lee playing a good guy for once), Countess Dracula (with Ingrid Pitt) and the 'Karnstein Trilogy' of The Vampire Lovers, Lust for a Vampire and Twins of Evil. (Which I was introduced to by the splendid Horror Double Bills the BBC used to run late night in the summers of the 1970s) Although best known for their classic horror films though they also produced films in other genres (they made a great deal of profit from horrifically bad film versions of the popular tv sitcoms of the time) Even though the popularity of the films faded Hammer continued into television (some of which may look rubbish now but frightened me to death as a kid.) Their style has been spoofed over years... but never better than here. Here's one lady who should be happy at least. (Some of those clips may be NSFW... or X-rated as we used to say)

Knox has allegedly confessed to helping to rape and kill her flatmate, Facebook aficionada Meredith Kercher, when she refused to join in with Knox in an orgy along with a Knox's Italian boyfriend and a Congolese musician.
