Is Tia Norfleet NASCARS's first African American Female driver?

According to her website and several news stories, Tia Norfleet has an impressive racing resume, and is said to be the first African American women to compete in Nascar. However, it appears those claims may be exaggerated. The result has caused an uproar on her Facebook page between her supporters and detractors. Further clouding matters, Tia’s father Bobby, has in the past accused NASCAR of Racism for denying him the chance to race. For a sport hailing the achievements of Danica Patrick and desperately trying to promote diversity, could this incident hurt the progress NASCAR has slowly started to make on that front?

What do NASCAR's AJ Allmendinger, Joe Haden of the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants safety Tyler Sash, Carlos "Chooch" Ruiz of the Philadelphia Phillies, and many other athletes have in common? They have all used a performance enhancing substance that is growing in popularity among athletes, one that is widely prescribed and which is taken by millions of children every day. The drug in question is Adderall: The combination of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine is used as part of a treatment program to control symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Professional leagues generally allow the use of Adderall for treatment purposes. As it pertains to Major League Baseball, in 2011 a total of 105 players were granted exemptions under the league’s drug policy to fill prescriptions for Adderall according to an NBCSports.com article. That’s about one in every 10 players, a much higher rate than the general population. Adderall is said to enhance performance and stamina, but some sources claim that the potential boost in physical performance is a bit of a myth and that one amphetamine can not be distinguished from others in a test, so Adderall may only be a convenient excuse for use of illegal amphetamines. In the NFL the type of drug the athlete has tested positive for is not released publicly, and suspicions have been raised that athletes are claiming a failed test for Adderall rather than drugs such as steroids or HGH that have a less innocent reputation. Other NFL players simply drank from the wrong bottle. (Or maybe there was a sample switch.) Adderall use is common performance enhancer among students: Even the phrase “the study drug” seems mildly contradictory, an oddly tame and constructive form of rebellion, a prescription drug abuse with a very modest, one could say almost praiseworthy goal: to concentrate a little better on a paper or test. Similar stimulants are used to maintain alertness in battle: According to military sources, the use of such drugs (commonly Dexedrine) is part of a cycle that includes the amphetamines to fight fatigue, and then sedatives to induce sleep between missions. Pilots call them "go pills" and "no-go pills." Adderall is one of the most commonly abused prescription drugs, and professional athletes may be primed for addiction in unique ways: A study published in the Journal of Sports Sciences, which tracked competitive runners in the U.S. and triathletes in Hong Kong, found more than half had compulsive-exercise tendencies. As Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton described it when he was sidelined with a back injury, “alcohol and drugs were the closest thing I could find to getting that feeling when I was playing the game.”

Sure the television broadcasts catch every angle of NASCAR wrecks. However, I think views from the grandstands offer a unique view of the thrill and danger of these events.

In between other things, including voting for huge cuts to the EPA's budget and regulating power, the U.S. House of Representatives just voted to eliminate Title X, originally signed into law 40 years ago by Republican President Richard Nixon, which provides funding for Planned Parenthood. If Title X is cut, a number of services for low-income women would likely be reduced or eliminated across the U.S.—including vaccines and screening to prevent cervical cancer. According to CDC statistics, cervical cancer was previously the leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. The single biggest factor, according to the CDC, in reducing cervical cancer mortality over the last 40 years: the availability of Pap tests, which can detect precancerous cervical cells (for instance, changes resulting from HPV, which more than a quarter of U.S. women ages 14 to 59 tested positive for in 2007) before they develop into cancer. The House did not, incidentally, vote to prevent the military from sponsoring NASCAR race cars.

During the last lap of the NASCAR race at Talladega Super Speedway the car in the lead got tapped by the second place car and went airborne and smashed into the catch fence. The frightening wreck resulted in injuries to seven fans. NASCAR has been using the dreaded restrictor plate (a plate that fits over the carburetor and restricts the flow of gasoline and slows the cars down) since 1987 after Bobby Allison had a similar wreck at the same track. NASCAR officials still give lip service to their commitment to safety but it's well known that NASCAR doesn't really do anything until someone dies in a wreck. David Poole, who writes for the Charlotte Observer is one of the few members of the media calling NASCAR out on this .

NASCAR as little as they like it, has it's roots in Moonshine. Junior Johnson, one of the early heroes who is considered the greatest to never win a championship, has even gone legal with it after getting his start running Moonshine for his father. He was even the subject of a 1965 Tom Wolfe Essay as the Last American Hero. The latest cheating scandal to hit NASCAR? Junior just says they were doing their job, being creative, and just got caught.

With little sponsorship money, the loss of big-name drivers to retirement, F1 and NASCAR, this year's unification of IRL and CART was a long time coming, and may lead to a series that race fans may start caring about again.

Aero Warriors: Battling at super speedways on Sunday to sell cars on Monday. In 1969 only showroom stock cars were permitted in NASCAR sanctioned events. This meant in order to compete a car had to be produced and available through dealers in minimum quantities. Only minor changes for racing were allowed. And in 1969 Ford and Chrysler were locked in a Battle Royale to win races. To this end both produced cars designed to dominate on the 1+ mile speedways. For Chrysler: the Dodge Charger 500, Dodge Charger Daytona, and Plymouth Road Runner Superbird. For Ford: the Ford Torino Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II. Aero Warriors is the story and history of these street legal, 200mph (320kph) capable, wildly winged cars from the Chrysler side of the line.
