Sir Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) was a British painter. Spencer studied at the Slade in London, but he spent most of his life in the village of his birth, Cookham in Berkshire. Deeply religious and obsessed by resurrection, Spencer viewed Cookham as a "village in heaven" where everything was invested with mystical significance. Inspired by his idol Giotto, he took scenes from the Bible and restaged them in this tiny village by the Thames. Christ carries the cross through Spencer's front garden. Jesus heals in the attic of his house. Stanley and his brother watch from behind the shed as Christ is betrayed at the bottom of the garden. He is crucified on telegraph poles in the high street. In the village churchyard, the dead are rising. Spencer served in Macedonia during the First World War and, deeply affected by the experience, spent 9 years from 1923 onwards decorating the specially commissioned Sandham Memorial Chapel (inspired by Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel) with intricate murals documenting his experiences [photo gallery] [video tour.] He was officially commissioned as a war artist in the Second World War, and spent 7 years documenting the work at Lithgow's shipyard in Glasgow in a series of monumental canvasses. An exquisite draughtsman who was equally at home painting everyday subjects, for too long his eccentricities overshadowed his art. The reputation of this "divine fool of British art," who turned up for his knighthood with a carrier bag, sketched on toilet paper, and pushed his easel around Cookham in a pram, has in recent decades been radically reappraised. The frank and intimate approach seen in his domestic works, often exposing his turbulent personal life, influenced a generation of artists. His astonishing nudes of the 1930's (nsfw - he was almost prosecuted for obscenity over these in the 1950's) provided the template for the work of Lucian Freud. He created an invaluable record of two World Wars. "Half a century ago, Spencer seemed old-fashioned; today, art has caught up with him. Eroge for All Seasons

Japan has a flourishing market for video games featuring adult content, or Eroge. Unfortunately, the sole exposure of some westerners to this wide genre may be through the controversy surrounding the irredeemably disgusting Rapelay (previously). That's a shame, because there is wide variation in content and gameplay focus in even the small subset of Eroge games translated and released for the western market by specialty publishers like Peach Princess and G-Collections. For every Rapelay or Water Closet (which should only be played if you wish to subsequently gouge out your eyes with a dull spoon), there are games like Amorous Professor Cherry, The Sagara Family, or Come See Me Tonight, which at least attempt a coherent narrative love story and usually reward empathetic behavior. Even these games are only more subtly misogynistic, unfortunately; the female characters are targets, first and foremost, as evidenced by the fact that the most difficult endings to obtain in each game feature unlikely sexual couplings of two or more of the female characters with the first-person narrator, which are known as "harems" in Eroge game parlance. Which brings me to my two final examples of Eroge, and the only two such games I've played thus far that I would recommend to a wide (mature) audience: Kana: Little Sister (for those concerned, no actual fictional blood relatives are banged in the course of gameplay), and Crescendo. Both are visual novels, include only a few mature scenes in the course of several hours of gameplay, and attempt to evoke complex emotions and leave a lasting impression on the player.

Rammstein's Pussy (video, really NSFW, SLnYT) gets right to the point. Youtube has taken down uploads. Facebook has taken down links (though not Links). Here's a fan-created censored version (NSFW lyrics). Contrast Pussy with their earlier work, Keine Lust, in which they parody themselves as old, fat, and sexless (until they rock, of course). Are they intentionally following a route blazed by Spinal Tap? Pussy is not the band's first controversial video. Their cover of Depeche Mode's Stripped used footage from Leni Riefenstahl's 1936 Olympics documentary, Olympia (including the beautiful diving sequence). When asked whether it was wise to base their video on a film commissioned by Hitler, the band said that they are not Nazis.

Director Neil Krug takes 70's inspired washed out photos. He directed Ladytron's Tomorrow video and is releasing "Pulp Art Book", a collaboration with model Joni Harbeck using expired Polaroid film. His upcoming movie "Invisible Pyramid", equally nostalgic looking material, is about two girls "escaping the loss of a loved one in search for an answer to their ambivalence". Ernest Greene is uninvolved, but he puts out the perfect accompanying music under the moniker Washed Out. Neil is also producing White Flight's "Children of the Light" video. The last of the polaroid film is due to expire next month, and the Impossible Project (previously) is working (with Urban Outfitters) on having something out by 2010. Some interviews of Krug reveal his travel and methods. Alexandra Valenti produces similar work as Krug.

Dash Snow, seminal artist, is dead of an overdose. Born into art world royalty, Dash was the great-grandson of prominent collector Dominique de Ménil. On the streets at 13, Dash gained notoriety for his graffiti as 'Sace' and his antics with the Irak crew. Famously profiled in a 2007 NYMag article, his debauched art was a reflection of his rough existence and vitality. Sex Galaxy (trailer 1, trailer 2, NSFW) is a new film that claims to be the first "green film," as it is made of 100% recycled material. In an Wired article, director/producer Mike Davis discloses his film sources. "Boarded-up libraries, abandoned schools, decaying drive-in movie theaters…. These are the realms in which I unearth my wares," he said. "And actually, many of these films are available on the internet. You can find amazing collections through the Library of Congress." The Wired article notes that the recycled material isn't itself wholly original, and Bad Lit expands the history of film plunder further. Sex Galaxy is sourced from Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women, which relied on footage from Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet, which in turn is sampled from the Russian film Planeta Bur. The history of film reuse is long and storied, and continues after the jump. Roger Corman, known for his frugal use of props and footage, was the mentor to Peter Bogdanovich, director of Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women (which Corman produced). Then there's Sandy Frank possibly best known for bringing live-action Japanese film to the United States, but reworked through editing and dubbing. 10 of his films received the MST3000 treatment. Additional fun: Internet Archive hosts Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women (1967), Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet (1965), and Google Video hosts Planeta Bur (1962) in it's original Russian form, without subtitles. Fugitive Alien and Star Force: Fugitive Alien II, Sandy Frank creations, were based on the 1978 Japanese series Sutâurufu (often called Star Wolf in the US). You can watch 4 of the original episodes online: Ep 1, Ep 2, Ep 3, Ep 4 The group These United States only used public domain footage for their video "Get Yourself Home."

Andy Warhol's Frankenstein and Dracula: almost begs the gorge to rise

Though film is not generally Andy Warhol's field of greatest fame, some see his long and storied history in film as "where Warhol's supreme achievement lies". And then there are the two horror films from 1973: Andy Warhol's Frankenstein (or Flesh for Frankenstein) and Andy Warhol's Dracula (or Blood for Dracula). The two films were filmed quickly and inexpensively in the Spring of 1973, using the Roger Corman method of filming two movies at one location using the same actors to decrease costs. Frankenstein was filmed first, using Space-Vision 3-D. But filming 3D footage was too expensive and time-consuming, so Dracula was shot in standard 35mm film. The films are a mix of tribute to and parody of Italian horror films. Both movies were shot in and around Rome, and edited at the Cinecittà studios,which were opened by Mussolini in April 1937, and later the location for Roman Holiday and Ben Hur, amongst others. Despite the pedigree of the location, the content of the films were not the of the same sort, with gory effects in Frankenstein including innards [that] resemble lobster salad, an evocation that stresses the obvious expense of this production (NYTimes.com Bugmenot) and Dracula receiving an X Rating from the MPAA due to its violent and sexual elements. Regardless, or because of this, Both films were commercial successes by Factory standards in the United States, Europe, and, for the first time, Japan. These films would be the last two Factory films that Paul Morrissey directed, and the last Factory films in which Joe Dallesandro starred. Morrissey first worked at The Factory in 1965, sweeping the floor, a year prior to the making of The Chelsea Girls. Morrissey went on to take over the directing, pushing Warhol's films in more commercial directions. After these films, Morrissey continued to direct movies, though he stopped when it became harder to finance independent films. Dallesandro, probably the guy(parts) on the cover of Rolling Stone's Sticky Fingers, continued to have acting roles, though he now manages a hotel in the heart of Hollywood, where he lives with his cat Booky. The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has given these films to the Andy Warhol Museum. Since the mid 1990s, Don Hertzfeldt has been making animated shorts by hand. To date, his 8 primary films have an apprioximate runtime of 75 minutes, and in total have won 117 awards, all shot on 16 or 35 milimeter film. (There is another 8 minutes or so that was part of the Animation Show (previously).) His recent films have been shot on the same camera rig that recorded It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966), as he noted in a 2007 interview (part of a Scene Unseen Podcast (direct link to the MP3)). Hertzfeltd is currently two thirds of the way through his most ambitious project to date, a trilogy of films which have been called "the closest thing on film yet to Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey." (Video links inside) Ah, L'Amour (1995) - awarded Grand Prize Award for "World's Funniest Cartoon" in 1998 from the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival (now known as The Comedy Festival). Genre (1996) mixes stop-motion and 2-D animation, and was shown on an episode of MTV's Cartoon Sushi in 1997. Lily and Jim (1997) - single-handedly animated from over 10,000 drawings, and was shown on an episode of MTV's Cartoon Sushi in 1998, and Hertzfeldt's first short with a vocal track. Billy's Balloon (1998) - The film was invited into Official Competition at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival (where Don Hertzfeldt was the youngest director involved), and it won the Grand Jury Award at the 1999 Slamdance Film Festival; has also appeared on Adult Swim and MTV Rejected (2000) toured North American theaters between 2000 and 2004, first as part of Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, then with fellow animator Bill Plympton's films called "The Don and Bill Show," and finally as part of Hertzfeldt's own the Animation Show tour. Welcome to the Show/Intermission in the Third Dimension/The End of the Show - 3 shorts created as an introduction, intermission, and end for the first "Animation Show." The Meaning of Life (2005) is the result of almost four years of production and tens of thousands of drawings, single-handedly animated and photographed by Hertzfeldt. Everything Will Be OK (trailer) (2006) won the 2007 Sundance Film Festival Jury Award in Short Filmmaking, a prize rarely bestowed on an animated film. I am so proud of you (2008) Hertzfeldt traveled with the film on a sold-out special theatrical tour of his work in 2008 and part of 2009.

Bizarro fiction isn't really a new genre. Just a new term. The current crop of bizarro authors are generally young and new to being published, with Carlton Mellick III as "both the Johnny Appleseed and the Johnny Rotten" of the newly dubbed genre, who started printing his stories under the header of Eraserhead Press. But what is Bizarro Fiction? A battle between the real William Shatner vs all the film versions of himself, resulting from a failed terrorist attack by Campbellians; bizarro-noir novellas, set in a world of murderers, drugs made from squid parts, deformed war veterans, and a mischievous apocalyptic donkey; or just a nice children's book about two Vampires who compete in a mustache competition to prove who is the faggiest of all. (via a local paper, though I didn't see the article isn't online) The first version of Eraserhead Press started as a bet that Mellick couldn't publish books without spending a single cent. He was able to make saddle-stitched chapbooks for free, selling the end product for $2.25 with free shipping, by befriending Kinkos employees or posing as a student to get access to university printing equipment. The organization had various stages before Satan Burger became a success on it's own in 2003. From this small start, the genre/scene has grown with two more independent publishing companies (Afterbirth Books and Raw Dog Screaming Press) , with Bizarro Central as a major hub, generating it's own Bizarro Magazine.
