The Memorial. "People talk a lot about the "healing process." Well, this is New York. In the aftermath of a tragedy of monumental proportions, the healing process has been noisy and rude, with elbows out, redolent of greed, power, and the darker forces that drive human existence. And most of the shouting has been about how to make a fitting monument to what happened here. But in a hundred years, all the shouting and all the politics will be forgotten. What will be remembered is what is built here, now, on these sixteen acres." [more inside]

I recently bought a cheap DVD of
Broken Arrow, the late 90's John Woo thriller that portrays an attempt to steal nuclear weapons.
A earlier MeFI thread briefly brought up NEST,
or the Nuclear Emergency Search Team who are supposed to find these things if smuggled into the United States.
I
googled on it, and while I wasn't surprised to learn there have been a large number of hoaxes I was surprised find out there have been some
thirty incidents not classified as a hoax.
A large part of the Woo film deals with the idea of The Feds searching for nuclear weapons from oribit.
Well I might just be a country boy but even I know there is Physics and then there is
Movie Physics so I was curious -
can these nuclear weapons be spotted by satellites? Maybe we're getting
all bothered over pretty much nuthin, if The Feds already know where they are.
Rense has a interesting post about NEST in NYC.

Ship searched for nuclear material after it was diverted from New York harbor, reports MS-NBC. Apparently a Department of Energy Nuclear Emergency Search Team (NEST) was involved. Initial report states that elevated gamma and neutron emissions were detected.
Aside from this report--which is unconfirmed--how likely is such an attack? How do we deal with thousands of container ships, each holding hundreds of anonymous containers? This kind of attack scares me much more than airplanes dropping out of the sky.

Missing, presumed dead in NYC. Dead at the Pentagon. While we talk about
understanding the terrorist's reasons for the attack, please remember that each number we see scroll across tv is associated with a human being - who's only crime on September 11, 2001 was having the nerve to go to work or visit an international landmark.

Tonight is the first night of
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and tomorrow the one-week anniversary of the attack. Am I the only one nervous about a knockout punch tomorrow morning?

A thoughtful and fascinating analysis of the historical backdrop to the current situation.
Why did this happen, what circumstances got us into a de facto state of undeclared war with the Islamic world, and what can we realistically do to prevent those circumstances from ever recurring? --Charlie Stross
