"Oh my God, it's orcas attacking sperm whales."

On April 18, a half-dozen orcas battled a pod of sperm whales off the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The unusual encounter is one of fewer than a dozen such recorded conflicts — and the first observed. “We saw the water churning on the horizon,” said Heinrichs, a photographer and filmmaker who was in the area looking for blue whales. He and his colleagues steered their boat toward the patch of white water. As they got closer, they saw an enormous dorsal fin slicing through the water — a killer whale trademark — and then noticed the group of sperm whales, clustered together in a defensive stance.

At that point, Heinrichs did what many of us would not do: He jumped in.

The village that re-emerged

AFP photographer Juan Mabromata recently visited the ruins of Villa Epecuén in Argentina, a small touristic village that started slowly re-surfacing after the rising waters of the nearby lake left it completely underwater nearly 26 years ago. In the 1920s Villa Epecuén was established at the shores of Lake Epecuén, a salt water endorheic lake frequented by folks from the city of Buenos Aires looking to bathe in its waters and benefit from the high salinity's supposed healing powers.

Final recipient of an interconnected group of ponds, the Epecuén would increase and decrease its size in cycles, according to variations in the rainfall regime. The water level increased gradually since the foundation and by 1978 an embankment had to be built to protect the village from the rising waters. On November 10th 1985 the levee couldn't hold back the water anymore and the village was slowly flooded. It took sixteen days until the water left the whole city underwater, and it eventually reached a depth of 10 meters in 1993.

The water started receding some years ago, and you can walk around parts of the city nowadays, and even speak with the only person that went back to live in the desolate village. (MLYT, in spanish, unfortunately.)

More of the Human Planet

The BBC nature series, Human Planet, has been mentioned here before. Photographer Timothy Allen traveled with the film crew and has created this audio slideshow. Allen talks about his subjects and how he took the photos. There's a button "show captions" in the bottom right corner of the image window that's also helpful.

Awesome Aurora Pics

Katja's Aurora Page. Katja Gottschewski, German expat somewhere in Norway, posts an immense amount of awesome aurora pictures on her blog-homepage. "In September 1999, I moved from Germany to Bodø, Northern Norway. Since then, I have been very keen on the aurora, which I had never seen before. I had read about the phenomenon, but didn't know much more than that it existed. I could never have imagined something so fantastic! I was surprised that it was so big, and that it often moved so quickly. And it never gets boring: There are endless variations of form and colour."
Links for many hours of indulgence inside.

Rufous Hummingbird

The Rufous Hummingbird measures only 4-inches, but it can pack a lot of beauty into that small package. Often described as "feisty," it weighs just a little more than a penny. With a migratory range of 1500 km, the Rufous has the longest known avian migration proportional to its size.

Great photographers

Great photographers: Clark Little (surf photography), Nick Brandt (mostly African wildlife), John Hyde (mostly wildlife and Alaska), Veronika Pinke (landscapes), Dale Allman (miscellaneous; particularly beautiful are his Australian cityscapes and the HDR/DRI photos), Ansel Adams (the undisputed master of nature photography who died in 1984; famous quotes: "You don't take a photograph, you make it.", "A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words. "), Michel Rajkovic (mostly marine landscape, exclusively in black and white). And again, as a tribute to a gifted artist who died far too early, the work of Bobby Model (adventure photographer). Last but not least: Onexposure, probably the biggest collection of quality photography on the net.
