Demonstrations were held in cities across the country, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, to protest against a range of of social and economic policies being implemented by the Abbott government.
About 3,000 protesters marched through Sydney, voicing their concerns on a range of issues, from Australia's asylum seeker policies, to education cuts and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
"... if children could go to the polls then perhaps Fred Nile, the leader of the Christian Democratic Party in NSW [New South Wales, Australia
], wouldn't have the power that he has today." An 11-year old Charlie Fine writes about an issue
that affects children across the Australian state of New South Wales. [more inside]

Objects Through Time
tells the story of immigration and the changing ethnic diversity of New South Wales, Australia through "movable heritage
" - that is, artifacts and objects with historical resonance. While almost ignoring 50,000 years of aboriginal occupation, the site does a nice job of both familiar topics through a fresh lens (e.g., Captain Cook's "secret instructions
"), but also takes pains to look at those lesser known topics which may be more accessible through material culture than through texts. [more inside]

More Public Servants to Rally Around.
In what appears to be a extremely trying time, the members of the NSW Fire Brigade have been working insane hours, under the most intense conditions
....and with a largely volunteer force. Although, I heard NSW Premier Bob Carr this morning on the news state that he intends to have the (accused) arson culprits visit burn wards and help with clean-up with the intent to "traumatize" theses kids. Strong stuff but I gather that's the kinda guy he is. Of course, if you feel the urge, you can give until it hurts.
(registration required). Makes me want to emmigrate again.
